My vet just brought us round a young dog, who was about to be pts, by his owners for 'biting'. He thought it was a bit dodgy when they called him, so he asked if we would take him in for a few days, to see what his temprement is like. The owners said he was a mastiff, 2years old, but didnt give any other info. They didnt even know if he was up to date with vaccs etc! Anyway, we have him here now and he seems a sweet thing, but he is not like any mastiff I have ever seen! He is very small, with a docked tail, black, white and tan coloured, with short hair. His face is a bit like a great dane, but he is quite small and thin (compared to our Neo's and Bordeaux) Any Ideas? We think he could be a Cane corso or Presa Canario, but as I havent seen either of these breeds Im not sure! Can anyone help us identify him, I can get a photo. It would make it easier to re-home him if we know what breed he is!
I can help you slightly, firstly are you 100% sure it isnt a cross breed because i have to say it does some strange but the only info i can offer is firstly i doubt very much its a Presa, they are MASSIVE dogs and they are extremely rare in Britain, it could be a Cane Corso, i have only seen one once but here is a test for you to try, if the dog drools it ISNT a Cane Corso, they i think are they only mastiff "type" dog that doesnt drool, everything else does but get a photo plus from the colouring i would say it could possibly be a Cane Corso although i couldnt conclude without extra info but good luck.
Presa`s are not that rare in the UK, theres some quality breeders of Presa in the UK if you look hard enough, i can think of at least two good kennels off the top of my head.
Really, that surprises me, ive only EVER heard of one breeder in Brighton!!!

I think he if definitely less than two years old, I'd say 1yr maximum

He looks like a Boxer cross to me.
Thats what I thought, bless him, he's very sweet. We'll try and build him up a bit, and see how he turns out in a couple of weeks. I cant believe someone would want to end his life, they didnt try to re-home him at all. Luckily my vet is very vigilant when it comes to destroying a healthy dog, and thankfuly we had a small space here for him.
looks like a boxer crossed with bisenji not sure if my spelling is correct.
Id have to agree, BoxerXBesenji looking to me!
Mmm I think if hes a cross, he looks more StaffxBoxer to me. I have Staffs but they are more bully than that. He is extremely strong and def has boxer markings-I cant understand why a cross breed would have a docked tail though?
Kerrie,
I'd guess Boxer cross Staffy,
I've got Boxers myself, and have seen photo's of a friends young Boxer X Staffy as a pup
and these too look remarkably similar in head properties, only hers was brindle and white
and had a long tail with white tip.
Why dock the tail, probably someone was hoping to pass them off as pedigree Boxer pups :(
Many many years ago an ex-boyfriend had a Boxer x breed with a docked tail, his father was a Collie/Lab x mother a boxer
and again I think because the pups looked more Boxer they had them docked....
Kind Regards
Kirstine

There is a GSD x Rott in my village which is docked and my friend has two English cocker x american cocker spaniels which are docked - maybe breeders think they can get more money for them this way
He's a lovely looking dog though, definitely a boxer x something :)

You've got to ask yourself why a vet would dock tails of cross breeds. Surely far from necessary? Then who's to say the vet did it!

If the mother is docked, then many vets will assume the pups are the same breed (they aren't all the sharpest knives in the drawer when it comes to identifying breeds!) and dock without a qualm.

Not wishing to start off another docking debate ( ) but if thats the case why dock many breeds at all ;)

afew vets around will dock any breed someone wants docked if they still do the docking...

I think it would be a rare vet who could tell a boxer from a boxer-cross at around 3 days old, which is when docking is done!!

I won't get into the 'dock or not' debate either but just wanted to say that I had completely forgotten that not everyone is so honest as to admit where pups have come from! ... and there was me thinking that people would be up-front with a vet! Doh! :-(

Hi,
I think he looks like a boxer cross too!
He is definately not a Presa Canario (I have one) or a Cane Corso which is actually very similar to the Presa. Good luck finding him a lovely home though.
Debbie

Boxer cross IMO. There is one up the road from me and she is VERY similar

He's deffinatley a boxer, I think he's crossed with a terrier, because of his leaner look.
Hope you find out soon. I would never say there was any mastiff in there though!
He is a sweetie!:D
looks like boxr cross with terrier type.i have seen this type before and its looks exactly like this.looks like it has no mastiff blood whatso ever!

He loooks a gorgeous little fella irrelevant of breed or X.
I agree with everyone else he's definitely Boxer or X-Boxer.
Who is it that breeds Presa's in Brighton? My Phoenix lived originally in Peckham but I would love to know who bred her.
Hi lookslike a boxer/staff cross to me
Mandy
We have found out from the original owners (through the vet), that he is a Boxer cross Staffy, I dont know where the Mastiff reference came from! They were asked for a donation as they were about to have him pts (which would have cost £80), and offered a mere £5! Oh well he's better off now Thanks everyone for your input :)
My guess was correct :D
Blimey what a cheek re donation :0
I reckon he'll turn into a nice dog if he gets the right training!
LOL knowing how stubborn and willful some Boxers can be then mixed with staffy..
Mischievious, stubborn. willful, brains, big, boisterous, hmmmmmmmmm
Best of Luck :D

Pyndath,
I didn't get any pedigree info on Phoeny. She had been through so many owners. She was vaccinated in Peckham and the vet thought she had been bred around there. That's about all I know. The guy who either bred her/owned her from an early age, she was vaccinated at 8 weeks, was an 'unsavoury' character. He owned Presa's/Corso's/Pit's and basically any dog that is popular with the 'big boys'.
Sorry for not replying earlier I've been off line.

It is against the
Terms of Service to post a link to your own personal web pages, why don't you pop the link into your info ?
Admin will probably edit the above posts that have links :)

Oh my he is very Boxer in type, except for the longer muzzle :D If he has a Boxer Temperament they probably jsut found him too exuberant and he probably still mouths through lack of training.
At this age many youbng Boxers are very lean too.

He looks lovely, and in good condition - I would say not too lean for his Boxer body. Would guess that the dock is a "home done" job to try and pass the puppies as pure Boxers.
