Thank you for your replies, don't worry we didnt take as patronising at all and appreciate expert tips.
Murphy is booked to be neutered in January and we had said 15th december onward purely for financial reasons and also holidays off work so we could spend the necessary time settling the dogs in.
We had thought of a bitch in case there was any issues with dominance rather than another dog.
It looks as though there is a lot of conflicting advice though.

Thanks. Have I gone and deleted my original message about golden retriever breeders?
It was just about information on upcoming litters from december right into the new year. We live in edinburgh area.
Had also meant to ask about the darker golden retrievers, our dog trainer at puppy classes had one and mentioned they were the more traditional ones?

You will have to go to the Visitors Forum and see if you can find your original post on there :)
Aside from the issue of actually obtaining a pup at this time of year from a reputable source, I would certainly be inclined to wait until Murphy (like the name!) is a bit older before you should consider getting another pup. As it has already been pointed out to you, Murphy will be entering the "Kevin" stage when you get this pup, and it would be very hard work for you trying to manage the training of one teenage dog with the training of a young pup! Might be a beneficial idea to wait until Murphy is at least 18months before considering getting another addition, for everyone's sakes! :)
I know what you're saying as we only finished the first level of obedience classes in august. (we started him early so the first few it was for socialisation).
We have a few factors in wanting another (and final one) so soon, this included a bit of company for murph and could eventually train together before we do up the house to sell in a year or two.
Are you saying it would be harmful for Murphy if we got another one in the next few months?
Thanks

I'm sure Murphy would be delighted if you got another dog (particularly a bitch) just as he hits his teenage phase - but think about teenage children and how they behave, especially when there's more than one of them......... If you can wait until Murphy (I love the name too, my best friend has a GR called Murphy) has gone through that teenage phase, he'll be a far better role model for your new pup, and your job really will be three times as easy, rather than being twice as hard dealing with a pup and a teenager ;)

Don;t forget also that a pup will need at least 3 if not 4 or more meals a day for at least 6 months, and for many dogs seperation anxiety sets in after well meaning owners have taken time off to 'settle the new dog in' ......... Far better for any dog to have a regular day to day routine that doesn't change too much ;)
Thanks for advice, after all ive been speaking to we're now thinking of getting eventually another dog rather than bitch and not getting neutered unless due to medical reasons.
We dont mind hard work as nows the time before getting house done. We just thought a bit of company for murph as he plays with the cats (they get on so well).
Realised now that there will always be a dominant and submissive behaviour but as long as Murph won't be unhappy?
