Hi everyone just a quick question my friend has a border collie she has had puppies before but this time when she came into heat she was not going to breed her.
Anyway she looking after her sisters 5and half month old collie pup (male) and her girl was in heat he did try mate with her but did not tie or anything like that, that was about 4-5weeks ago she is being funny with food she will not eat till late on a night and she has swollen mammary glands but not very much swollen.
Anyway when she was rubbing her dogs tummy a little drop of milk came out of one of the teats near the hind legs.
She has gained a little weight but not very much as she is a broad bodied female anyway, She is more quiet than usual i have told her that its highly unlikely that she is pregnant as the pups testicles hadnt even dropped down.
She called the vet and they said that she is most probably pregnant as he was old enough to father a litter even though his testicles hadnt dropped what do you guys and girls think..

She also cleans her vulva alot more than usualy i have checked her and there is no sign of any discharge or any bad smells.

It's not impossible for the bitch to be pregnant - despite the young male's testes not being fully descended, if they are low enough down to be at the same body temperature as they would be in the scrotum he could well be fertile.  If nearer the 4 week mark since the 'incident', I think I'd be visiting the vet rather than discussing over the phone in case he can feel anything.  If 5 weeks + it will be too late to feel but should be checkable on an ultra sound.

HTH, Teri

I have suggested taking her dog for a scan to make sure but she says that she dont want to put her under any stress by taking her as the dog gets upset and stressed when she has to go to the vets in general so i guess she will have to play the waiting game..

2 min scan may answer the question :-)

I am only guessing but if a dog is terrified and gets so stressed out going to the vets what would it be like whelping or if it need emergency treatment. This are all things and situations people must think about.

With a false pregnancy, the symptoms often come earlier than they would do if it was a real pregnancy.  If the only chance of mating was 4 - 5 weeks ago, that is unusually early to see milk if it is an actual pregnancy.  If you don't want to scan, then you can only wait and see.  Other than speying the bitch now, you can't do anything about it anyway - you'll soon know one way or another.
