I was wondering what all of your opinions are od Dr Johns dog food? A friend of mine feeds it and her dogs are looking great but i wanted a few more opinions before i switched mine over.
I have a large breed and they eat a lot. I try to feed 50% complete and 50% barf and they seem quite happy on this. My only problem is that i have to buy all my raw poultry from the supermarkets and the bones are £1.75 each from the butcher. Its becoming quite expensive. Dr Johns is only £6.99 a sack which is very reasonable.
Your help would be greatly appreciated

Hi! Karren
I own a GSP & feed her DR Johns. In fact she is now going through her 2nd 15kgrm sackful! The Gold is good but has slightly more protein & oils than the silver. As she is a bit overweight she is now having the silver / her coat has become glossy & she no longer has dandruff also she has completely calmed down ( as calm as a GSP can be that is!) I do sometimes mix some chicken or baked beans in this or even some warm water which makes it more palatable. My friends dogs mostly gundogs also are on Dr Johns also with good results! Can I suggest try it & see for yourself.

We have fed Dr Johns to  our older dogs for about 2 years now, we fed this food in the mid 90's as well and it has always proved to be a great maintanance diet, they have beautiful glossy coats and not had a days illness in the last years so they have not shown any illeffects, they are very healthy, so if its not broke don't fix it is my thinking. We use about 6 sacks a month.

My bro feeds his Weims on this - has done for the last few years.  Everyone comments on their coat and condition, they also are worked and it seems to keep them very fit and healthy :)

Mine's fed Autarky Summer (almost identical to Burns active/ James Wellbeloved) and does really well on it, I used to feed Dr Johns but although happy with coat and condition, preferred to 'pick up' less often and dryer 'offerings' ;)  to me DR Johns seems to suit bigger dogs better than smaller ones.

Hiya,

I too have some of my Dogs on Dr John (Gold) and they retain an excellent condition.  They are adults, and I would only ever use this food as a maintenance diet.

There are much better diets on the market, but as long as it works for your dogs, as it does for some of mine, then that's what matters.

It's a good food for the manufacturer, it's an easy way of disposing of the waste products from human food processing at a profit.

It's a good food for the owners because it's cheap.

Whether it's good for the long term health of a dog is debatable, especially as it contains preservatives which are generally accepted to be carciogenic.
