Hi, well I did Psychology many moons ago, and if I remember correctly, that experiement was where the guards were treated as prisoners and vice versa (is that right?).  If that's right, then what happened over time was that the prison warders/guards behaved more and more like you would have expected the prisoners to behave - being unruly and not obeying rules, while the prisoners became more respectful of rules, etc (not sure now if I have remembered this correctly!)

Is that rights so far?

Anyway, if you do see this before you finish your work - and the last post is correct, I suppose the implications are that by treating prisoners with respect and allowing them to make some of the rules, have priviledges and so on, will help to make them more law abiding when they get out.  Treat them how you would want to be treated and they will in turn treat you better I suppose!  That is probably why prisons seem to be so easy going to some people, with TV in the cells and visiting rights, etc.  (Not saying I agree with any of this, just what I think the implications are)  Don't know if I am right though.

The opposite side to the coin is that if you take away all of someones personal liberties and rights and treat them badly, they will in the end rebel against it (as the guards in the experiment did) and be even worse than they were before.

Hope this helps.

This same example is used now in Management courses. I guess  some employers could be seen as prison guards ;-)

Good luck with your essay.

Its basically showing how placing people in position of power and stereotypes can cause them to behave in such a way.
I remember researching that study, one of the more interesting ones imo.
