how do you get the bitch to produce more milk. the pups are 48 hours old now doing very well. but mum not got enough milk, shall i start to help feed pups or keep them on her??

The more they suckle the more milk she will be stimulated to produce, so make sure she has plenty of liquid to drink, and let the pups determine the supply. The production increases steadily after birth as the pups become more demanding until at three weeks she is eating for England and lactating in competition with a Freisian!

What makes you think she doesn't have enough milk, if as you say the pups are doing very well?  Just weigh each pup daily to check that they are all putting on weight, and that they aren't dehydrated.  Milk seems to come in fully on the 3rd day.  How many are in the litter?  If it is a big litter or they are not gaining, you could top up the smaller ones AFTER they have fed on the mum, but if they are all gaining weight on mum's milk, then there is no need.

theres five in the litter. her teats empty looking and to feel, which is good as dont want them rock hard.

The weight and of they are content is the best indicator.

Some bitches you never actually see the milk leaking ever and happily raise a good litter.

Just weigh them all every day at roughly the same time, write down the weights and as long as they are all gaining everything is fine.  You could put the smaller pups on the best teats (back ones), but with only 5 puppies there should be plenty for all.

I thought that my bitch didn't have enough milk.  I was used to seeing bitches with teats hanging down to their knees when they had pups but mine was totally different and I didn't ever see evidence of much milk.

What I did see was healthy growing pups who I weighed daily.  Don't worry.

Mine too, with each of two litters. She seemed to make her milk on demand and did not "store" any - she fed two large litters well for 3 weeks each time and "topped up" adequately until they were fully weaned. Have to admit, I did worry with the first litter, as I too thought she wasnt producing enough, but the scales told me different :D
