Quite surprised that no one has mentioned about these two incidences as both reached the newspapers. Petsville, well known for buying in puppies to resell was struck by fire. Arson is suspected, fortunately all animals were saved, although occupants in flats above the premises had to be evacuated, again no one hurt.

The Family Pet Shop Ltd, formally, North Street Pets, of Romford, Essex was raided by the Police, RSPCA and Customs and Excise and Environmental Health officers . They found in a shed on the premises a freezer containing 50 frozen animals, including puppies, kittens and rabbits. It is also allege that they are questioning the female owner for having/using on the premises veterinary medication that was prescription only, can only presume obtained/used illegally.

These are particulary nasty incidents, however I cannot help but wonder what does happen to puppies, kittens etc that are returned to the premises of these awful pet shops for one reason or another.  Also what happens to the puppies and kittens on the premises that become ill, I cannot imagine that all pet shop owners are prepared to spend the money on veterinary bills, exspecially if the puppy is suspected of parvo and may need hospitalization - costly business, many will weigh up the odds and not bother. Another good reason why I think that no puppies or kittens should be sold from pet shops.

i totally agree that animals should not be sold from petshops. I don't suppose many people would even think of what happens if an animal is sick and returned.

I always wonder what happens to the ones that don't sell while they are at the "cute" stage.

I was told by my breeder who knew someone that had worked in one of the large ones that the pups were destroyed once unsaleable.

I have always said that if petshops were not allowed to sell non cage animals that a lot of puppy farming would be seriously curtailed.  It would mean the puppy farmer would have to sell direct and be under the buyers scrutiny.  If it didn't stop them it might make them clean up their act, especially if the RSPCA would put out some publicity about buying from sources where they could see mum and pups in good conditions.
