I am trying to remember the name of an artist who although never 'popular' was around late 70's early 80's I believe.  Her name was either Carol(e) Williams or Johnson and one of her more popular songs I believe was either Sing a happy song or Sing a song of love.

Certainly the chorus I remember was:

Come on and sing
a happy song
Come on sing
a song of love

and another line was

no man is an island
you're gonna need a friend
oh but just remember
all your troubles are only for a while

if anyone knows of her or (and here's really hoping) where I can purchase her album I would be grateful.  My searches on the web have come to nothing and HMV and Virgin stores have not been able to help and I am now fed up of singing the chorus in shops in the hope someone might remember it (I have embarrassed many a young shop worker with my dulcet tones)

Here's hoping!

Thanks

Can it be Carol Williams If you go to Amazon.co.uk and type in CAROL WILLIAMS and then click the Music section, you can find links to a couple of CDs

Hope thats her...

Not her I'm afraid.  I doubt very much she would have any of her work on CD, I definately think if I ever do find her album again it will be on vinyl.  Not looking very promising though, I have been asking people this same question for the past 3 years and no-one remembers her or the song. Thanks for trying to help.

I believe you when you say it isn't the one, however, please do remember that LOTS of old LPs have been converted to CD now. Carol Williams (in my link) first put records out in the 70s....pre CDs ;)

It is entirely possible that the person you are looking for can now be found on CD and not just on vinyl :) You might find that helps

Yes, very true!

To perhaps add a little to what I remember of her, she is a black artist and the type of music was soft reggae/soul.

No, not her I'm afraid.  I have typed the lyrics into Google and nothing!  I have tried the most bizarre of search strings hoping something would appear, but to no avail.  Thanks for trying though all.

According to the Guiness Book of Hit Singles, both George McRae (No 38 in 1975) and the O'Jays (no 39 in 1979) had hits with "Sing a Happy Song".  This might help you locate anyone else who have covered or written the same song.

Still not the one I'm afraid, checked out the lyrics but no!  Oh, well, thanks for all the suggestions, much appreciated!
