Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Who can show my dog for me?
- By Guest [gb] Date 30.09.04 21:47 UTC
Hi,

I have got a rottie who I really want to show but just haven't got the time and I was wondering if anyone knows who would be able to show him for me at our local shows. I live in Cornwall and even if he started being shown with someone he will definately still live at home with me. He is a KC Registered Rottweiler with very good breeding.

Regards

Hi Guest
If I could not find time to go to shows I would not let my dog go with anyone else.
I was put of showing my dog myself.
So I let other people show him.
Turn back the clock and I should have carried on showing him myself.
If I was you I would just show him when you have time.
You will get more pleasure that way.
The feeling when your dog wins that first rosette stays with you forever.
It doesn't matter what colour it is.
Do try to go and enjoy showing even if you don't win.
You always take the best dog and fetch the best dog home.
Good luck with showing.

Guest if you do not have time to show him do you have time to train or exercise him or do want the handler to do that too.

My friend trains her dog, is at home all day and wants to have her shown, but the dog is a very lively little girl and quite a handful. So when my friend is at a show I usually handle her dog for her as she is too worried about making mistakes, and we all know how that can travel down the lead! My friend sits at the ringside and watches cheering us on.
Are you actually planning to train the dog and attend the shows but want somebody to handle the dog? If so that is not usually a problem as you will meet people at the show who would probably be willing to do this. However if you don't have time to train yopur dog or get him to a show yourself then unless you pay a professional handler, in which case the dog will live with the handler then it is not likely that your dog will be shown. I do wonder if you don't have time to train and socialise the dog or take to a show whether or not you handle him yourself, what do you do for the rest of the day? Do you work all day for example, or work from home? A little more information regarding your set up and what you actually want would be much more helpful to us so that we can give you the best advice.

ppl come on here for some help and then get jumped on, i can see why most guest dont come back.

there is nothing wrong with wanting some1 eles to show your dog. i would love to show mine but cos i dont drive and DONT Have time i cant.  if i know some1 in my area that would show them i would love that.  just cos some1 dont have the time to do the show does not mean that they are not traned.

I am sorry Staffie love but in the UK at least it is still the norm that one shows ones own dog for the pleasure it gives one, and most of the time that a dog is shown by someone else it is because the person cannot physically manage it, mor they have more than one dog in the ring at once, but would still be at the show.

Cannot see why one would want to send a dog off to be shown, and why anone that wasn't it's breeder for instance would want to do it, as if they liked showing they would show the8irm own dog.  Also unless the person goes to shows they will not make the freinds that might do this for them.

I wouldn't entrust one of my girls to a complete stranger, though will happily let any fe3llow exhibitor take them in for me when needed, and I do the same for others.

In USA and to some extent insome European countries a dog may be owned by someone but live with and be shown by someone else.  A proffesional handler like this will charge a hefty fee, and ther are many dogs shown by famous or rich people, who probably have hardly met their official owners.  There are handlers in the UK in some of the strong breeds or those needing a very fit handler and I beleive that they charge around £50 per clkass, plus petrol and other expenses.  Frankly I can't see the point.

I didn't show my foundation bitch until my swon was old enough to be baby sat by grandparents, which was when she was two years old, so had a brek in showing from my first dog of a different breed, but kept abreast of things with the dog papers and so on.

I think it best to go to ~Ringcraft classes, local matches and the odd exemption show until you have more time.

I too cannot drive due to being partially sighted, and rely totally on very kind freinds to take me, there are about 3 who regularly take me for a share of petrol costs (sometimes have to be forced to take it mind).

Dear Guest

Lots of people show dogs for other people, I know several who own their dogs as pets and know nothing about showing and their dogs have been shown for them.  Several are multiple CC winners.

The best thing to do is find out if anyone near you thinks he is good enough to show and would want to campaign him themselves.  For that you would need to go to a show or visit a successful exhibitor breeder etc.

One famous cc record holder was spotted outside a shop!

It is true that someone will handle you dog for you but it is up to you to train the dog and take it on lots of road work, groom it and to ensure the dog is in a suitable state to be shown and present at that show in good time. All we are asking is it the guest is prepared to do this themselves or do they want someone to take on the dog for them, i.e. home the dog, train the dog, campaign the dog and arrange transport to shows, the owner just getting the pleasure of being named as the owner. Now if you show a dog it is not difficult to get someone to take it into the ring, sometimes if you live near or are able to deliver the dog to them they make even take the dog to a show for you, but that is a different matter from taking the full responsibility of showing a dog for someone else. We are not criticising the guest we just do not know what it is they are wanting to do.

I thought from the original post that the guest was wanting someone to actually take her dog to shows for her. As said before if you don't have time to go to a show how have you got time to exercise, groom etc. If I added up the time it took for me to prepare my dogs for a show...including exercise, ring craft, grooming, practice at home etc the amount of time spent to actually go to a show is very little in comparison.
