Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Male or female??

Hi, my wife and I are set to get a Staffordshire in the new year. We wanted a male but heard that they were more aggressive and territorial than a female and may be more likely to snap at children. Is this true?? We appreciate your views on this. Thanx, Terry and Ruth

Me personally I prefer males over females...I find a female will ruin your lawn and a male the tree's. I think from a good breeder and early socialization and obedience is a must to have a well behaved dog of any sex. I really don't think one is better then the other, it just depends who you get your dog off of and how well you socialize your puppy from the start. If the puppy know's what is expected of him/her and you use a gentle but firm hand (as in obedience ect) you should be fine...

best of luck :)

Can't talk about Staffs but in general I prefer males much more easy going and reliable in their temperament, far less ups and downs.

Hello.
I have Staffs and although I don't have a male at the moment the one I had Sam was the most laid back almost horizontal dog I have ever meet. :)
A well bred Stafford male although slightly heavier/stronger than the average female should be a perfect family friend. Socialized well from the start I have found they are to be honest less likely to cause trouble than a bitch.  They are sure of themselves and that is not in a bad way.
Well bred and lots of fun socialization when young (as with a bitch) and you will have a family friend for the next 14-16 years.
Oh by the way - who ever told you that Stafford's snap is talking rubbish and I would give them a wide berth in future. NO Stafford should EVER snap at any human especially children brought up correctly with respect they are fantastic babysitters (with adults present of course) ;) I would not tolerate a dog that snapped. And as long as you go to a reputable breeder rather than baragin page dealers you will not regret your choice for one minute. Do your homework before you buy; as always and buyer beware if you don't.

Edited to say. If you have no strong preference either way I envy you your position. Go and see a well bred litter from parents you like, and from a breeder you will trust and know by the time you get to see the pups. And go and see the litter both sexes and choose the one you like; You'll know when you see the pup which one is for you. :) Be it dog or bitch you'll know.

i have kept both, males and females are the same as each other if they are trained and socialized correctly.some males are more dominant than others but females can be like this also.it depends on the nature of the dog and the line it comes from more so than the sex.
the main difference is that usually in any breed the dogs are bigger than the females but my parents have my old boy sister (boxers) and they were the same size but big boxers so the sex didn't come into it.
i honestly think it is personnel choice but i have found males and females are the same on the whole,i wouldn't pick one over the other but alot of owners prefere a male/female and stick with that.
i currently have a male but i am also considering getting a female as i have always had 1 of each together.

Hi dollface,

I've got a male and he has ruined 'BOTH' my lawn and my trees. Do you think he is 'Gay'?
  :D

I have two staffy pups, candy whos 10 months and buddy whos 7 months. They are both very loving and well behaved and in fact buds is mcuh softer with me than candy, so dont believe anyone who says male satffs are aggressive. They aren't if brought up right!!

Terryandruth
think you will find either male or female equally as good as the other :)
males do not snap at children unless the aggresive temperament is there anyway which can be there in any breed-
Good luck :)

I've never known a SBT snap at children - they are known as the nanny dog. We've had boys and girls and as long as they are well socialised they get on with everyone. I'm sure which ever sex you choose you'll end up with a friend for life! :)
