I noticed this morning that when someone knocks on the door I always say hang on and put my dogs in another room whilst I open the door,It dawned on me today it may be a very stupid thing to do in view of the awful things that happen these days, people getting attacked in their homes etc..but then there the point thats been recently aired here about if our dogs bite someone or knock them over we can be sued  just a thought

Good point mattie. Before Christmas (this was in the local paper) someone had an older, slightly deaf dog asleep upstairs when a burglar broke in and managed to get the video out- he'd gone back in for the TV when the dog woke up went down stairs and bit him. The owners pleaded not to have the dog pts and they'd drop all charges- they dropped the charges and the dog was still pts- talk about keeping to the deal eh:( I don't know if this is true or not but I heard that you'd be covered for this sort of thing if you make sure you've got adequate 'Beware of the Dog' signs and such like?

Kash Hi

Am i reading this correct, you have a dog in his own home a burglar comes into your property to steal your goods and chattels?
and the dog protects you and the dog gets pts .In that case what would happen if you have a sign up stating the dog will bite if you enter property uninvited ??

Yes Patricia you are reading it correctly !!!!
Kash, don't ever put a 'Beware of The Dog' sign up, it can be taken as an admission that you knew the dog might attack, I have a 'Caution Dogs Running Loose' sign to warn people, not that they need any warning once the boys start barking. Ingrid

Well, I knew all about the burglar not be able to do no wrong and about the 'Beware' dog signs being seen as an admission of guilt before anything has happened but it all makes me so b----- mad!!! Us dog owners and our dogs can do no right and we have to tread so carefully to avoid any trouble. and as we all know things can happen so suddenly. I do worry where all this is going to end I really do.

Hi Alie, I am find this all really scary not having a dog for 5 years they just want any bloody excuse to destroy them. Its shame the muggers don't get the same treatment .

And so say all of us, Pat. Wouldn't it be great to be in charge? Couldn't do a worse job than the lot we have in or any of their opposition.;-)

Alie both on the same wave length :).Sat we had a very well known labour leader
in the road knocking on the doors to rally support:EEK: I noticed not one door opened to the lot of them .that must say something. lol

I think when mine's older I'll just get one of those 'I live here' signs with the picture of a GSD, again this could be dodgy as if I put it up while she's still a pup this might make people aware she's here and then possibly steal her?- I suppose it could happen! You can't win either way can you:(

On a related note:
In German, Beware of dog ---is usually put on signs as "Bissenger Hund" (Biting dog). A common sign that you see on peoples gates plays on these words by stating
"Pissenger Hund" alongside a dog's picture having the rear leg cocked up on a hydrant or even a person. :D :D :D
Oh well, it's German humour :p

Hi, this is all almost unbelievable!! I have heard of a tape you can buy that is activated a bit like a security light, that is the sound of a very big dog barking very threateningly - dont know where you can get it, but sounds like a good idea.

I shut my dogs in another room apart from 1 (normally one of the rottis) who I take to the door with me.
