Hi everyone
I have always cooked with Gas until I moved into my present house when we changed to electric because there was no gas connection for a cooker. However in the last 4 years we have had 2 new cookers and both have broken. I have never had any problems with a gas cooker at all.
Questio...what do you cook with? and has anyone had any problems with electric cookers or is it just me? I have got to make a quick decision as to wether to buy another electric cooker or should I have a gas supply sorted and buy gas?
Archer

I've had the same (second-hand) electric cooker for 20 years. It's a Creda Horizon 22, which unfortunately I don't think they make any more. I'm glad there's no gas in this village because I never want a gas cooker ...

I've cooked on electric and gas and gas gets my vote every time. We don't get mains gas so we are on a calor gas cooker at the moment - no different, just cheaper :-D

Gas hob, electric fan oven. Took a while to get used to the electric oven but cooking with gas is no problem :) would prefer it everytime to electric.

Got dual fuel as well and it's my choice every time. Gas hob and electric fan oven :)
Best of both worlds!

We had electric when we got married because it was 'donated' to us and we had no money to buy a cooker. When we could afford to replace it,we bought gas, when we upgraded that cooker to a bigger one with double oven we chose gas.I would never buy electric given a choice although I do have a combination microwave which is also a godsend :D
Jacqueline :)

I've never heard of a house being destroyed by an electrical explosion ... one of my terrors ...

Plenty burn down due to electric faults though, far more than gas explosions I wouold think,.
Gas gets my vote every time. We always had aga type ranges when I was younger. Then we got an electric cooker for summer - the electric had to be replaced after about 3 years. I have all gas now, with bottled gas, on an eight ring two oven cooker, and it is fab. Good for baking too.

OOh Archer you've got me all worried now!
I bought a new gas cooker when I left home (12 years ago) & loved it. Lasted well & is still as good as the day I had it!
But when we moved here (12 days ago) there was no gas in the kitchen, to avoid the hassle, we decided (after a week of pondering & being cookerless) that we'd get an electric.
We've had electric cooker with a ceramic hob & I love it!
I have always had a gas cooker......never had a problem!!

I'd vote for gas every time too. We had a gas oven for 4 years, then changed to an electric fan oven and gas hob when we moved. We are refitting our kitchen soon and I will definitely having a gas oven!

)If I say it's her time to cook she takes us out for a meal. :D Maybe I should do it more often? :)

I've had electric ovens ever since I got married (Mum had gas) and to start with I hated it but now I turn off the heat before things are finished and they finish off by themselves :-) You can't do this with gas

Hi Archer,
My first cooker for numerous years was gas as that is what mother said is best to cook on.
We then in the early 90s got a fan assisted oven but with a gas hob and had that for a few year.
Next move I put a range gas cooker back in and I tell you I could not believe or remember just how much quicker the fan assisted Electric is/was until I had the gas back. NEVER again.
This house we are back to a double Fan assisted oven with a gas hob.

Have cooked with both gas and electric, but now would never cook with anything other than an electric ceramic hob with halogen or similar. By far the easiest hob to clean and heats up instantly, unlike the old fashioned electric hobs. My last halogen lasted 15 years without a problem - I only replaced it because we had a new kitchen and I wanted a wider hob to take all my bigger saucepans at one time (at Xmas etc). Also, when I reach my dotage, electricity is much safer for older people :D

When I moved to this home the cooker was left and it was electric, I persevered for 6 month and then had gas piped to the bungalow and bought a gas range, we were sick of the electric stove and my husband said if he saw me walking around with another saucepan whilst I waited for the plate to cool down we would live on takeaways. Guess I missed a good offer there.
Think it is what you are used to by I am reckoned to be a reasonable cook but when I was using electric you would never have known it.

Don't know how old your electric was, but they are much better now than the old ones :) I can't claim that they are as quick as gas when you turn the heat down, but it is far, far better than years ago :) The cleaning is SO much better than gas tho' :)

Not sure about that, def. the saucepans were more difficult to clean with the electric because they were always burnt, as to the hob I don't think there is much difference as with the gas the grids go straight into the dish washer if needed and then it's just a wipe over, with the electric and spilage had to burn off and you could smell it around the home for days. Think the worse thing was the number of times I put something plastic on the still hot plate without realising. My sister had one of the electric cookers with a glass type top and I found that worse you could not even shake a pan on that for fear of scratching it.

Well our previous ceramic hob lasted 15 years and had hardly a mark :) My stainless steel saucepans are 26 years old and I've never burnt them :D They look like new - except the handles and lid-knobs are starting to go through putting them in the dishwasher :( And I'm certainly not particular about my hob or saucepans :D

I have had full gas, gas and electric and all electric.
I have now decided the best out of all of them if the Part gas part electric.
Electric oven and gas hob.
But what I would REALLY like is,
Gas hob.
Electric oven
Gas grill.
Is there such a thing?????
Lea :)

Dunno about cookers never got the manual on how to cook There's a wood burning Aga thingy in the kitchen tho' keeps the place lovely n warm & bags of hot water for long bubble baths LOL
Gas is great. Think about it, what do all the top chefs use? ....gas.
Electric, too slow and with those fans on them roasties not crunchy just nasty soggy things. Yorkies like chewy leather. Is it worth risking soggy spuds and leathery yorkies? Have gas, no fan assisted thankyou. When cooking several things together that need varying temps what good is a fan oven with it's all over even temp? Make sure you choose one with a grill too, many of these new ovens don't have one and real cooks definitely need a grill.
Harriet
Im shocked you admit to eating Yorkies :o is this with or without fur and when do I report you to the rspca. Lol
:D Am quite partial to the odd Dalmation too, with a nice Chianti of course.

And do you prefer your spotted D's with butter and sugar or are you a custard type (home made, of course)

Gas here, after 17 years of marriage and 4 children, we've had a few cookers, tried electric but hated it, I now have a nice new stainless steel built in oven and hob and I hope it lasts forever!................it's great!
