It has been some years since I had my Affix, does anyone know how easy it would be to re-instate it. No one has used taken it up in my breed.
Thanks in advance

I would have thought that once you get an affix, it's yours for life.

If this isn't the case, I'm sure someone will correct me!

Gill, I would send them a letter (or even better a photocopy of the original certificate) and a cheque and ask them to re-instate it :-)
Fiona, your affix is infact 'hired' from the KC. You have to pay a yearly maintenance fee to use it and if you stop paying, they take it back :-)

Wow Leigh- I never knew- is it expensive:) And what about those people who use their names?- surely this can be given to no one else? If it's hired and you no longer hire it- could someone else breed their dogs under your old affix, providing of course that they pay to hire it

? That wouldn't be very fair especially for people who have put a lot of time into breeding etc and establishing their affix.

Others will be able to fill you in on the details of the affix system, but facts:
It was £45 to register an Affix with the KC.
& Yearly Maintenance Fee was £15.00 or £12.00 if paid by direct debit.
I'm really not sure what happens to non maintained affixes?
I know that breed clubs have the right to appeal to the KC for "Historically Significant Affixes" to be protected for a period of 20 years, but have no idea of the time scale for 'normal' affixes. Maybe Gill can update us when she applies :-)

Thanks Leigh;) It's not that bad then is it- but on the other hand when you consider people are using their names and yet they have to pay for it- it's not quite so good.

you could say it was expensive! Ive just sent the form off to apply for an affix and it cost £70 and then on top of that is the anual maintance of £20 or £17 depending on how you pay

I believe that if you do not pay your yearly fee to the KC, after a while you do lose that affix so anyone else in any breed can pick it up and use it. A bit unfair I know if you have built up a good name but I am sure thats the way it goes.If you are unsure whether anyone has now got your affix I can look it up in the KC registered affix book for you, Gill.

If I stopped paying for my affixz, you could apply for it and it would then be yours to use. Clubs often pay to protect a historically significant affix for some years after a breeder dies! Unless they do so, andyone could then re-use it! In the old days you could buy them for life.
A friend of mine had hers for life, then added her husband to it, and now has to pay yearly!

I've discovered that a pug has had my affix used as his name. When I rang the KC they said he was an Irish dog but they would look into it and come back to me. Still waiting!

Hi Gill,
I too let my affix go and after about 15 years I wrote to the Kennel Club to ask if I could re-apply for it, they said it had not been re-issued to anyone else, and they also sent me a form to apply for an affix, I filled it in, just with my 1st choice, I didn't have to pick the usual 2nd, 3rd choices etc., and 3 months later I had my old affix back, it was as simple as that, and I didn't have to pay the back years just the normal fee to apply for an affix, so just write to the KC explain the situation, and thats all there is to it.
Hope this is of help.
Regards,
Chris.

When we re-applied we had to pay £65.00 and then of course the yearly fee. It had lapsed for about 8 yaers. I think that they leave it 10 years before anyone can use your old affix name.

Does anybody else think it's quite bad that others are allowed to use your affix?

Yes I do think it unfair to allow someone else to use your affix. When I applied for one in December we finally got our 13th choice!!! The form was sent back the first time with instructions not to use:a combination of our names, no word from a dictionary!!!!! Made it pretty difficult until we decided they meant English dictionary so we chose an Italian word, worked out well as it happens as we chose Bellini knowing that it meant "small & cute" but not knowing that it is also a champagne cocktail: we have cockers & don't dock!!!!!!
