Hey people, I'm new and as you can guess I own Akita's!!! haha.
Anyway, I haven't really began in the world of breeding as yet, and although I know a lot about it, I don't have much experience. I've had one litter before but the mating happened while I was out so I didn't have to do anything.
I've been propositioned by somebody to use my dog at stud to his bitch. Everything seems fine although the proposition is that I shall get a pup as the fee?
To be honest, I do not want to 'go through' another dog pregnancy and worry so much for dog and pups again so soon since my dog had pups only 2 months ago and I'm only recovering now!!!!!
How would I go about arranging a fee up front and the actual mating of these 2 giant dogs..?
Thanks

If you dont wish for pick of the litter, you must come up with what you think a reasonable stud fee and a stud contract, i dont know much about Akitas, i am presuming that your dog has passed any health tests that are required for Akitas?? I think it would be a huge mistake allowing your dog to be used at stud without even knowing wether his lines are compatible with this bitch.

Are you experienced in the world of showing? I am sure that is what anyone who wants a stud dog would be looking for.
I am a little confused as to why you weren't present when your last dog was mated. As you will be aware (knowing lots about breeding) that dogs are usually mated 48 hrs apart over a few days.
Can I suggest that you take the time to read a few of the past threads on the subject that is well documented time and time again on boards like these and does make interesting reading for anyone who has an interest in dogs. The pro's and con's of using a dog as a stud are discussed repeatedly as is the recommendation to consult your dogs breeder.
Just put stud, or breeding into the search box and you will be rewarded.

Presumably your dog has a good hip score, has been eye tested and is KC Reg. If so and any bitch is also tested & KC Reg, it's up to you what the stud terms are. He's your dog! I'd be suspicious of someone who insisted on me having a puppy in return for a stud. It is very advantageous to the bitch owner - no money to lay out and one less puppy to find a home for. The only advantage to the stud owner is if the bitch is absolutely wonderful and you really want a puppy from her. Mating Akitas is definately not for the novice. They are big powerful dogs and you really need plenty of knowledgable people around when the mating takes place. I've had some dubious owners ask to use my boy, I just tell them to send me a copy of a current eye certificate, the hip score and pedigree. I never hear from them again! My boy has never been used and that suits me - I don't have to worry about where his puppies end up.

Rather a sweeping statement that is certainly not true in every breed. In a breed like mine when litters are often one, two or three puppies it is not an advantage for the bitch owner to have one less puppy to find a home for and you could have a situation when you have bred for nothing (and maybe even had to pay for a c-section) as the stud dog owner would take the puppy.
It is up to the stud dog owner to state what they want in return for the service, and then for the bitch owner to agree to the terms or not. If you are happy for your dog to be used (I'm presuming both dog and bitch have had all the relevant tests) then say what you want for the stud fee whether it is money or a puppy and then the bitch owner can agree or decide to go elsewhere.
Incidentally if you agree to have a pup you don't actually have to take the pup home. We have someone in my breed who does insist on a puppy as a stud fee if her dog is used. When the puppy is old enough she allows someone on her own waiting list to buy the puppy, they collect it from the bitch owner but pay the stud dog owner.

Don't know what your breed is, but we were talking about Akitas here. This is a breed which does not generally have whelping problems and frequently has large litters of rapdly growing puppies. Sadly, it also attracts owners who think their bitches can be nice little earners - especially if they don't have to shell out for a stud fee.
I decided against using my dog with this bitch as I eventually found out that she was not even KC Registered, never mind having tests etc......

Really glad you made the right decision. Sadly I don't suppose it will be the last request you'll get for unsuitable bitches - but next time you'll be prepared with your answers (& questions) ready.
Well these are my first steps in trying to breed some good quality dogs that I love, Akita's. I know a lot about the breed (well, enough) to know what's required and accepted as good quality. I THOUGHT I knew enough on breeding as well but after visiting here first I can see I don't yet know enough. I have another 12 months before I would even consider using my dog and bitch for mating yet, so bring on the info for the next 12 months!!!!
