Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / More than 1 puppy at a time???
- By Guest [gb] Date 02.09.04 19:28 UTC
Is it safe/sensible/best for the dog(s) to obtain more than one puppy at a time and bring them up together?  The puppies would of course be the same gender.  Would it be sensible to have more than one puppy from the same litter?

IMO no it is not a good idea to have 2 puppies at the same time, each pup needs and deserves your undivided attention until it is adult, then you get another pup. Having two bitches of the same age could lead to all sorts of problems.

No, it isn't a good idea, especially if you aren't used to having multiple dogs. Two puppies together mean about 4 times the amount of work and mess. They not only have to be trained individually, they also have to be trained together. Also, you've heard "Two's company, three's a crowd"? Well the pups will be the company for each other, and the owner is likely to be the unwanted, unnecessary third. No reputable breeder will sell two puppies to the same person (at the same time - a year between them, fine) unless they know the people personally and know how experienced they are with dogs.

I would say No too, I certainly wouldn't sell 2 puppies to the same person

I have three 18 week old pups at the moment (i also have their mother) and they're adorable, lovely natured, great company for each other and i wouldn't be without them etc., etc...
Would i keep 3 again? Not on your life!! It's the hardest work i've ever undertaken - getting each one socialised is a major operation, house training is MUCH harder with multiple pups, training class will(sensibly) only take on two pups so as not to disrupt the class, so the other pup has to go to a different class. Continuing the training at home is a full time job in itself - i have to separate them or they don't concentrate at all, so everything is x3. Now that they're teething, i need eyes in my a**e, and the amount of washing they produce is phenomenal! Then there's the attention that you have to give to each individual pup - luckily, i never had much of a social life anyway and i sure don't have one at the moment.
My advice would be to get 1 pup, love it, train it, enjoy it and then when it's older and a bit calmer, you can have all that fun again! Good luck, whatever you decide.

I agree with the others - definitely not. Get one pup at a time and then when that is mature - if you still want to go though it again - consider another one in a couple of years

We brought home two pups last year.  They weren't from the same litter, they were different breeds and there was a 3 month gap in between.  Boy that was hard work.  I wasn't working and had to put in a LOT of work to train them.  It's not something I would repeat and I would hate to do it with two pups from the same litter.

Don't do it.  I've seen families nearly ruined after beibg talked into having 2 from the same litter.  I wd. never sell 2 pups in any breed, never mind the breed that I have now!

I have had two Siberian huskies at the same time and i think it was the same amount of work, while your walking one, you can walk the other, their isn't two trips.
While your feeding one you can feed the other, no extra work their!!
The only problem is the effect two puppies may have on your carpet!!
Litter training becomes more difficult when you have two to watch. And chewing more destructive, but if it is what you really want and you have experiance in looking after dogs, i'd say go for it!!

You're right, when lead-training two puppies there aren't two trips - there are three! Each needs to learn to walk separately, and they need to learn to walk nicely together as well (that's the harder bit!).

I know someone who got two Terveuran puppies at the same time, a dog and a bitch. She did manage OK, but she never really seemed to bond with the bitch as much as the dog, through no fault of her own. As it was said before, two's company.......

I have to say that I would never recommend that someone had 2 pups from the same litter unless they were VERY experienced.  Having seen the bond that litter mates will have throughout their lives, it takes a great deal of knowledge and time spent with each pup on their own, to make sure that the pups develope as individuals, with their own personality and confidence to be themselves. Litter mates often rely on each other too much for backup if they are unsure of what is going on.  Some will panic if they are seperated.
The other thing is that if you have two at the same age, you may loose them both at a simmilar age and be heartbroken when they both go.
If you want two dogs, them have a pup, wait for about a year to 18mths and then get another.
