Perhaps someone could suggest ways of starting a desensitisation programme for your dog that may help her too.

(Sorry I can't help, I've got bomb proof gundogs!)

Hi there,

Yes Bach's rescue remedy is suitable for dogs - I've never used it myself but others I know have and they put either 3-4 drops directly on the tongue, or some place the drops in the water bowl.

Yes, I have used Bachs rescue flower remedy with my boy when he needed to heal from vaccine damage. Albeit he is so laid back, I couldn't tell if it worked or not :D  I used it in his water and also neat on the ulcer on his throat. I consulted an animal homeopathist and she is a great fan of flower remedy amongst other natural remedies.

Yes rescue remedy can be used on dogs & I know several people who use it & who strongly recommend it too! :)

My little one is petrified of loud bangs, so I used it a couple of years ago, it knocked him out a treat and he was fine for the new year as well.
Four drops straight in the mouth is what I was advised.

My old mongrel bitch was always firghtened of fireworks, as well as thunder.  In her younger years I used ACP to sedate her.  This worked really well, the drawback being that she was so tense,  it took a couple of hours to kick in and then lasted all night.  I changed to the Rescue Remedy after seeing in a health shop.  She was around beagle sort of size and I had trouble giving her the drops, so I would just put the dropper in her mouth and squeeze! I prob gave her too much, but as it's herbal, I figured it couldn't do much harm.  With the rescue remedy, i could give it to her as soon as she heard any fireworks/thunder and it will take effect with in about half an hour, if given straight into the mouth and a little longer if mixed with a drink.  It wears off after a couple of hours & can i found it can be topped up if neccesary with no problems.
I now have the same problem with my 2yr old Flatcoat.  He was frightened by someone next door letting off a firework.  It was so loud that if frightened me!  Although he is fine with gunshot, bizzare! He now used to have the rescue remedy, but now has a Skullcap & Valerian liquid.  He is on the S&V tablet, for another reason (Too long to go into here!), and that is great.  You can use S&V tabs or liquid as & when you need, either as a long term thing or just for 'special' occasions. I get mine from Dorwest Herbs at the Dog shows but they have a website. They are really helpful, and always willing to answer any questions.

Ginastarr,

If you would like to send me a PM I can give you more details about appropriate flower remedies for treating fear of fireworks. Flower remedies work well for fear as they relieve the fear without sedating the animal, they also should eventually cure the problem as opposed to just covering up the symptoms. Treatment is the same for any size of dog, 4 drops 4 times a day, but they can be given every few minutes in times of stress or anxiety.

Hiya my dog Bella used to be terribly frightened of fireworks and being home alone. I looked into various types of rescue remedies to give her and decided to try heart of the earth essences because they are preserved in organic cider vinegar not alcohol. They are also vibrational which means there is no herbal extracts in  (I was a bit worried that a herbal remedy may not be good for her).
They really work Bella is so much more relaxed with fireworks and loud noises and shes fine at home on her own. Best of all she seems more confident in her self. Id definately recommend it.

Rescue Remedy comes in a candy form, for humans, but of course we use many human meds for our pets.  BUT, don't use this one for your pets.  The candy form has xylitol in it.
