Calling all GSD owners hope you can help. My father in laws GSD aged 5, has developed and eye condition that is red and looks like a second skin growing over his eye.
His vet has told him it is inherited and he will go blind eventually, anyone got any advice on this? has anyone had experience of this. I have to admit I am not happy about his vets explanation, his only other offer of help was to PTS.!

Hope you GSD experts can give me some advice.
Thanks.

The only thing I can think of is a Third Eyelid problem possible due to an encounter with a cat? There are things which can cause a dog to go blind but this is not usually one. Even in the worst possible scenario having to be PTS is not needed! A dog can easily adapt to the loss of sight in one eye and because of their amazing scenting abilities they can adapt to even loosing the sight in both eyes!

My recommendation would be to see a canine ophthalmologist. Unfortunately you have not given a rough guide to the area where you live of I would be able to possibly point you in the right direction. If you feel like emailing me at john.well@virgin.net I'll see what I can do to find a specialist for you.

Regards, John
