How old are pups when they open there ears and eye's?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 20.09.04 21:12 UTC
Eyes open from 7 - 10 days; ear canals open at 14 days.

Some puppies' eyes don't open until day 12 or 13 - even within the same litter they can be different.  Puppies are born with their ears back and flat to the skull, but they flop forward within a couple of days.  You can test for hearing from about 2 to 3 weeks, generally nearer 3 weeks than 2.  When a bitch has a lot of milk and the puppies are really fat and contented it is sometimes quite difficult to get them to respond to noises until they start getting adventurous at 3 weeks (they prefer to lie on their backs and snore!).

Just as information, accurate electronic hearing tests cannot be done before 5 weeks.

the puppies are 14 days old tomorrow and not all of them have their eyes open or they r half open is there anything i can do fo them? No sign of ear canals opening yet ears have flopped down now so it shouldn't be long should it?

I wouldnt do anything at all to force there eyes open, just leave them until they open themselves.

Leave their eyes to open naturally. At this stage I like to have the litter out of bright light - not necessarily in the dark, but sort of twilight, as they would be in a natural den (though of course an underground den would be pitch black).

Don't worry about it as long as the eyes are clean and there is no sign of swelling. Some individual litters and some breeds seem to open their eyes later that others. Remember that the pups still can't see much even after the eyes open and their vision probably dosn't become as good as an adult's until 4 weeks plus.

I think it varies from breed to breed. I have had 3 litters all opened their eyes exactly day 15 , day 14-15 is the norm in my breed.
