My wife and I have agreed to get a puppy and we have narrowed it down to one of two breeds, either a Bull Terrier of a Staffy (we like the look of both). I'm sure many people think they are the same with the exception of a different head but I have heard there are other differences, specifically with temprement. Can anyone enlighten us on these differences (if any) so we can the most appropriate decision regarding our choice

Thankyou

John

As far as Im aware both are quite similair in that they can be boisterous and need a firm hand but are extremely lovable and not all are dog agressive if bred for temperament and well socialised when a puppy. I have staffys but love the bull terrier too- although I have never owned one (yet).
If you opt for the bully I would check that all health tests have been done prior ro the breeding as they can be prone to Kidney disease. Im sure if you contact one of the bully clubs they would be more than happy to talk about the breed :)
Good luck - whichever breed you choose :)

I own both, generally they are similar but there are differences in temprement. In my experience Bull Terriers tend to be lazyer and live life more for themselves where as staffies tend to live life more for the family around them. Staffies are more dog aggressive but a number Bull Terriers have been known to bite people (Princess Anne!) and I have never found that in a Staffy. Bull Terriers are far more stubborn than Staffies to the point where training is really difficult, I've never had trouble training Staffies. Bull Terriers are quite good guard dogs, Staffies are useless at guarding. Also some strains of Bull Terriers can develop compulsive behavior, like licking and tail chasing. Staffies display their intelligence in a more obvious manner than Bull Terriers

To sum up I think ownership of Bull Terriers is more challenging than Staffy ownership but the rewards are just the same if you are patient, if you are worried about the prospect of having an unruly dog I would recommend a Staffy bitch as they can be very sweet little dogs and easy to train.

I have never owned a bull terrier but have a stafford and would say though having known many EBT that they are more stubborn than Staffs a staff will do anything to please their owner  were as a bull terrier to me appears to sum the situation up first.

Just an observation. But both breeds great. Can't see you going wrong with either.
