I am a ** yr old girl and am interested in becoming a dog breeder (well i think i am anyway) I delivered 6 of my dogs puppies without my mum (because she went away, it wasn't her fault but because it was our first pregnancy she didn't realise the dog was in labour no matter how much i insisted she was) so my nana was there if we needed to go to the vets but she hadn't a clue what to do. I was after any information about doing it for a living because i enjoyed myself so much and felt very proud at the finish. Any information would be grateful along with links to relevant websites.

Thank You
Lucy

Admin edit: do not post your age in your posts. You have been told before

I remember your postings at the time, Lucy! Unfortunately most of the people who can make a living out of dog breeding are the puppy farmers, who don't treat their dogs and bitches well, because that costs money and takes away from their income. The huge majority of breeders have only a few bitches, sometimes only one or two, and have a litter of puppies every couple of years. But it is only done as a hobby - it won't give them a living. They have 'proper' jobs as well to provide their income.

Im actually cringing at that!! I think i had everyone abit worried didn't I! lol Was worth it in the end though. We kept the baby who wasn't very well and she is just the devil reincarnated! when shes been asleep she won't get up but when she's awake you know about it! lol

Hi Lucy

Never forget that you are morally responsible for every dog you breed for the rest of its life so breeding is not just about producing cute little puppies but can be about taking back a mature male at a moments notice (and having to cancel a brief holiday - the first in years) to accommodate him.  On the theme of it never rains but it pours you could then well be asked to take back another one at the same time.

There is a lot to breeding and, to make money and frequently even to break even you have to breed a lot of puppies and cut corners in their care.  I imagine there are very few "professional breeders" around

hi lucy,
i believe that the breeding of dogs should be for the welfare of the breed like trying our best to remove eye defects and hip displasia from the breed in the end the breed standard and health of the breed are of the utmost importance. Breeding for a living is a disgusting thought as before too long we would end up with more dog rescues etc than supermarkets!
myself in the past have only ever bred from dogs that have almost perfect health and confirmation so that hopefully in many years to come we can say 'bye bye' to all most common hereditary ailments.
Breeding dogs is a really only a hobby/sideline to improve the breed not profit making.
