please can any one help me i have an 18 week old jack russell cross who is driving me mad. she just refuses to go outside, she started off really well with newspaper  but after a couple of weeks she abandoned them. i've tried all the usual methods confining her, taking her out regularly, rewarding her even rubbed her nose in her mess but all to no avail. i have a 15 month old cross (shady and didn't really have any problems with him. i was hoping that the pup might follow shadys lead but nothing!!!!!!!! we have had her since she was eight weeks old and she came from manchester dogs home. shes very lively and playfull and we have had no problems with her other than house breaking. to my knowledge she hasn't done any thing out side. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
thanks charlene

Hello guest

Your dog has now associated elimination with unpleasant consequences.  (Rubbing her nose in excrement merely rubs the excrement further into the carpet fibres).  She will now avoid going in your presence as you have proved it is dangerous.

Take your dog outside, with a cup of tea and a fag if necessary, watch her like a hawk and when she does eliminate have a party; ignore any mistakes so that you make it more likely that she will go outside because you are reinforcing it by giving her a treat.  Hopefully you would not punish a child or elderly relative for lack of control of bodily functions; it is equally inappropriate for puppies.

It might also be worth getting her checked over by the vet to rule out the possibility of a urinary tract infection - it's unlikely, but best to rule it out first ;)  You are also discovering the problems linked with 'paper training' :(
