Both my dogs hate cats, which got me wondering..........
One if they hate them so much they look as if they would kill them if the cat got too close, is there anyway of introducing a cat to them.
And
If they have a cat as a house mate, are they more tolerant to neighbour hood cats or do they still want to kill them all on site apart from the one they live with???????
Lea :D

Hudson and Delta *tolerate* our cats ...but I know they would chase other cats...and I am not sure what they would do with them ;)

Fagan spends alot of time chewing on one of my cats (and whilst the cats leg is down Fagans throat said cat is usually chewing on Fagans leg  ) he is best of friends with my other cat, they even share her catch when she has been out hunting :)  Fagan doesnt really bother with other cats when we are out, unless they are "his" cats then he chases them - then they chase him   Today when leaving my mums her neighbours cat was outside all hunched up and Fagan growled then ran back inside and hid behind my mum :D :D :D  it took me ages to coax him back outside.

My cats often come walking with us, this morning we were over the back field and we saw two other dogs (which is rare) one of my cats was gone like a shot the safety of behind a fence, the other cat just sat and watched and the two dogs didnt even bother him, possibly because he wasnt running I think if he had ran they would have chased him.  A woman up my road actually commented to me about my cats (she not knowing they were mine) apparantly they torment her yorkshire terrier by following it when she takes it out, and when it stops they sit and pat it with their paws :D :D :D

I think when dogs live with cats they tolerate that cat but not usually others, but then dogs chase most things that run ;)

We have two cats and two dogs, our female cat rules the roost. The dogs don't pay much attention to the cats, only when the cats try to steal something then the dogs get in on the act. Our bitch makes sure both of our cats are clean and tidy each morning. She pins the cats to the floor washes one side and then the cats turn over and she does the other side. She checks their ears and their eyes and when they've passed inspection - they are free to go!!!

My two dogs wouldn't chase a cat if they seen one outside or on a walk.  We did have the cats before the dogs and I don't know if that made a difference.

I forgot about the washing, my cats always make sure the dog has a nice clean face :D :D

Hi Lea,

I have two dogs and five cats. My dogs and cats all love each other and often curl up together. The cats also often accompany us on walks. However if a cat that isn't part of the "pack" comes into our garden, the dogs go mad and run after it barking to see it off. They definitely don't tolerate intruder cats!

Thanks everyone. I am sure if I introduced a cat into my house, it would last about 30 secs!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, Still debating this. I like the back of Persians, but not their face!!! (I know am picky!!!!)
But dont know breeds of cats at all.
And I presume it is the same with cats as it is with dogs, ie breeding etc.
If I did want one I am sure the CPL wouldnt let me have one because of dogs and kids, so what is the situation. ie if I decided to get one, what would anyone suggest???
Anyone know about cats???
(And still at the thinking stage!!!!!!!)
Lea :)
Edited to say, the reason I say I like the back of Persians is the hair,  The length of hair etc, I saw one the other day that the women thinks is a cross persian and he was lovely!!!!! But the majority of cats around here are crosses. And any that I would even think about getting would be a spayed female!!!!!!!!!

Main Coon or Rag Dolls are lovely cats but I hanker after a Norwegian Forrest Cats that are part wild cat & huge ;) CPL had no problems letting us have a cat & we did have 6-8 dogs at the time(depending on resident guests)

A lot depends on the cat & the new owner

Hi Lea,

You could look at a Birman perhaps?  'Pointed' like the Siamese, semi-longhair, so less hard work than the Persian, and without the Ultra face.  I love 'em. :D

Hi Lea,
Oscar now tolerates my cats ~ in fact one of my cats chases him around! :O :D It took over a year to reach this stage.
Oscar is not so backward with other cats we come across outside though and would give chase at the first opportunity!
Good Luck! :)

we have 2 cats and our dogs are fine with them, unless the cats run and then the prey/predator instinct comes into action and they chase them luckily for Bruce, Jack and my pocket they now stop when they get to the fence :D :D
other peoples cats are another matter, before now Tess has been asleep on the settee, when a strange cat has walked in she is up at a start and chasing it off, im sorry to say if she ever caught somebody else cat she would probably cause it some serious damage :(

When we got our first cat (a very young grey kitten) one of the bitches decided it was dinner  . Before we knew it she had the kitten's head in her mouth. Thankfully my daughter was holding the kitten at the time and I was able to prise the dogs mouth open. We then slowly introduced them. The dogs were removed from the living room, leaving the kitten to roam about. She was then taken back to my daughter's room and the dogs let back in to sniff the room. After a week of this they were re-introduced, with the dogs on leads - just in case ;) It took a few days, but they eventually decided this ball of fluff was staying. She even came on walks with us.

Strange cats are still to be chased away, but not my cat. That's part of the pack.

Sorry Lindylou, I am afraid I laughed at that!!!!!!!!!! poor kitten!!!!!!!!Bet the poor thing never went anywhere near the dogs mouth again!!!! Unfortunatly, if Gemma did that, I wouldnt be able to prise the jaw open(Rotties seem to 'lock' their jaws!) took 2 of us 1/2 hour to get a chicken bone off Gemma that she had knicked!!!

Actually, Noushki (kitten) used to cuddle up to Krishna (dog) all the time :D Don't think Krishna was tooooo happy at first, but she got used to it. Unfortunately we lost Noushki on the dual carriageway about 2 years ago. Josh, the other cat, teases poor Chance (Krishna's grandson) all the time. Mind you, Chance chases him up and down the hallway - so I don't know who's teasing who ;)

All your dogs don't take a blind bit of notic to our cat, yet any other cat is to be chased!

Our cat will come on walks with us, he is a big softy and get picked on by the other cats in the street since our other cat passed away (she was the "queen"!)  but now he will only stare these other cats down when he has 4 large setters behind him!  Quite funny having a cat walking with 4 large dogs acting like he owns the road, knowing that he is bullied when no dogs in site!
