Help please all advice welcome, I have bought a georgous little english cocker spaniel, 8 weeks when I bought him, now had him for 1 and 1/2 weeks, but he screams, yelps, crys blue murder every single night and every time we close him in the kitchen (even for a few minutes to go the loo) me not the pup!! he seems to get really distressed scratching at the doors and sounding quite frantic, dont know what the heck to do-he was the last of litter to go and wonder whether he had been spoilt, but how can i help him to calm down and not be stressed-feeling quite stressed myself now listening to him-not to mention husband on nights!!! and children having to get up for school, can anyone shed some light please as to what is wrong? Thank you

Nothing is wrong, and at 8 weeks I doubt he's been spoilt ;-)  Is there any particular reason he can't go into the bedroom with you at night?  Then you'd be much more likely to hear him when he needs to go to the toilet (which makes for quicker house training IMHO)  Lots of owners also use either a puppy play pen, a crate or a stair gate to confine their pups for short periods when necessary.  Crates are particularly useful as they can be used in the bedroom as well.

He's simply missing his Mother and litter mates, and he's looking for the security of knowing that SOMEBODY is nearby.........  He's only a very little defencless baby after all :)

I agree with that advice; i also found childgates invaluable because you can pop thepup elsewhere for just a few seconds or minutes but he/she can still hear or see you, much better than closing a door.

I had my pup upstairs at night and she is very happy to be downstairs now at night :)

I would second that with regard to child gates.  I found that they really helped.
When we first got my pup home (over 2 yrs ago now) she was just the same and it seemed like the end of the world.  After it was sorted I came back on here and re-read my post and she had only been like it for a week or so but at the time it seem like forever.

It will get better, good luck

I think crates are fantastic.  They help pups feel safe and secure and also help emormously with toilet training:-)  We've always used them:-)

My mum has a cocker pup who's about 6 months old now.  She has a dog bed upstairs for him and one in the kitchen.  At night he just sleeps in the dog bed in her bedroom and he sleeps all night without a sound until about 6 when she lets him out.  He's really good and mum hasn't needed a crate or a gate.  To be fair, she is retired so is with him most of the day and night but he does like to know that someone is there and doesn't like to be on his own for too long.

I'm sure yours will be fine in the end.

My dog was just the same.....we didn't get any sleep for over a week and she showed no sign of settling so she came to sleep in the bedroom!!   Friends used to say that she would settle in time, but I'm not so sure!!!   Of course once in the bedroom...thats where she stayed.
