Abby hasnt been well and the vet has run all sorts of tests on her well we got the results today and she is allergic to pork, lamb, beef and chicken she has to be put on a special diet with no animal by products in and every couple of months have a course of antibioticsto keep the levels of bacteria down. The food she will be having will have to be changed on average every two yrs as the vet says that she will become allergic to that and her problems will return. Thats if we are lucky if not she will have to be put on steriods everyday.
What I didnt understand is the levels of folic acid were so high they were unable to get an exact reading as the machine only measured up to 47(the norm is 15-25) he did explain but there was so much to take in I have forgotten does anyone know what causes it?
Thanks

A RBC (Red Blood Cell) count would show up low/high levels of folic acid; it is common to have low levels; I am not sure what a high folic acid count would indicate; are you sure he said folic?

Fortunately you will be able to feed your dog turkey, duck, fish, venison, with no problems therefore she should be able to eat Burns and other foods ok; which negates the need for prescription diets.

It is vital that if she is on long term ABs that you give probiotics daily to ensure gut health and minimise leaky gut and other allergic reactions.

Yes he said folic acid  next time I go I am going to take a tape recorder with me as that way I can play it back and wont miss anything. There was so much to take in we were there for almost an hour.
I will speak to the vet about probiotics tomorrow.
Thanks

Abbymum,

I'm sure if you contact Burns on the web they would be able to help you sort out a safe diet for your dog, they have contact details on their website and the food is not as extortionate as that which is available from your Hills Science Diet Representative ;)

Good luck, there must be many alternatives available if you have enough info about what to avoid.
