Hi,
I hope that you can all help me with a few questions. Does anybody have any experience of moving from the UK to another non rabies country and taking their dog/s? If so how did you go about it?
I know that there will be no quarantine required, only a vet check before they leave but other than that i'm a bit clueless!
Is it best to use an animal carrier or can you arrange it yourself? It would be a long flight, do they stay in the crate the whole time? What about food, water etc? Also how much does it cost?
The timings of flights don't matter with regard to picking her up at the other end as my Father will already be out there before she arrives so can pick her up as soon as she lands.
Any info you can give me would be much appreciated as well as some ideas to help her cope a bit better!
Thank you!
Lesley

Which country are you going to? Probably the best people to ask are DEFRA, the equivalent in the destination country, and the airline.
IF (and it's quite a big if at the mo!) we were to go it will be New Zealand. I don't even know which airline it would be, can you put them on normal commercial airlines?

I believe so - but are you sure there's no quarantine? I know there is in Australia, especially now that we've got the Pet Passport scheme.
Thanks, that is a very good page and makes things a bit clearer. We have a book on emigrating to NZ that says you don't have to quarantine but I'm still not sure even after reading that link! I was under the impression that you don't have to if you come from non-rabies country.
I also didn't realise that they must be micro-chipped, our dogs are not at present but at least that is easy enough!
I'm a bit worried as it will be such a long flight for them on their own :(

My friend emigrated to NZ last summer with her dog and her horse, the horse definately went into quarantine but I don't think the dog did. Both surprised her by travelling really well with no ill effects and they have adapted to their new life very quickly. It sounds fantastic over there, five people have gone from the hospital I work in over the last few years and all are staying - I wishg I could go too.... :)

I've exported several puppies to NZ over the years, there was house quarantine for 4 weeks, you must be aware that regulations change very suddenly and need to keep in touch with DEFRA for the latest information.
The puppies always travelled well, the main thing on arrival was they were very hungary!
