Siobhan,
It may be a good idea to take along some small treats or a favourite toy, when you let him off the lead, you have to make yourself more interesting than the big wide world to a puppy, the first few off lead walks ;)
I also found running in the opposite direction to Spice, when she got distracted, was a good way of getting her to 'chase' me and to get her back onto her lead in the beginning.
Most walks now she is off lead wherever it is safe to let her have her bit of freedom and we have no problem with recall, sometimes we will just tell her to 'sit' ,'wait' or 'down' to reinforce commands and she has become very attentive to what we want her to do.She is now 11months,so you have a bit of training yet to instil in your puppy, but I'm sure it will all come together with practice :)
Jacqueline :)
Hi Siobhan
Look at similar topic on 13 September under Visitors questions - titled "How do I train a Labrador". John, who knows his stuff has answered the same question, perhaps you can get your mum to read it.
