Hi we have  puppies and I know people that have given puppies pet names before they are rehomed. Is this a good idea? If so can anyone give us some hints as we are stuck to what to name them. We have girls and boys. We would be grateful for any suggestions. Thankyou

Most people only name puppies so when they are talking about them its easyer to say something like 'alfie over there...' that it is to say 'that big brown one with the spot over there...' it just helps some people tell them appart as names are easyer to remember than descriptions.

You could just go for numbers if you wanted - One, Two, Three; or letters of the Greek alphabet - Alpha, Beta, Gamma etc. Or go by their looks - Fatboy, Spot, Tiny ...

perhaps when they are up on their feet they may have little personalities that you can nick name ...we had 3 pups this year ...chewy !!!!  flash ( so fast) and little poppet (shy pup )

Or just pick names like barney, alfie, georgie, amber, milly and like Inca said its always nice to call the little nick names like I once knew a litter and one of them was called cheeky for obvious reasons!!! :D
Also try looking at a baby names website or somewhere like www.behindthename.com

Have got some names for the puppies now for the girls i have ginger, molly, ebony and tamara and for the boys i have buddy and patch. I have got nine pups but one is pick of litter so not naming that one and the other is reserved so wont name that one either. What do you all think of the names then?

They are really cute!! We are trying to think of a name for our new wheaten puppy. Who is coming home on Sunday and we still haven't given him a name!!!

Another good system (as told by our vet) is to put a small dab of non toxic nail varnish on each of thier backs so they can be identified by colour.

Just beware because names can stick!  We had one spot, three spot, Patch and Mr Tubby, Batman, Pirate, etc (black and white markings that were easily identifiable. We didn't have to use the nail varnish trick as they were all individual.

Batman has ended up staying with us and he was 14 weeks old before we finally settled on a name as I was too embarassed to tell the vet he was called Batman!  My youngest son insisted it was a great name, as did his football team.  He's now ended up being called Bruce but it was a close shave.  Pirate is now Pie.

Just beware that after using a name for several weeks it is sometimes hard to get rid of.

I had orinally pick out ginger but now my patner and i agree that sky is a really nice unusual name and we r keeping her.
