I am hopefully going to use a maiden dog for my experienced bitch - but I am having trouble. She is very flirty with my young pups, but when it comes to the dog she doesn't want to know. My pup is mounting her, (unable to mate and only supervised) but the stud dog isn't. She is on day 11, my question is as I haven't got experience with maidens will he know when the time is right even though he has never mated before? All he is doing right now is cleaning her.

Sounds like the bit6ch isn't ready. She will encourage him when she is, and as to whether he will know, only time will tell. :D

Thank you
Is there anyway we can incourage him when the time is right? I have never needed to before as the stud always knew what to do LOL

I was always told that a maiden dog would try and mate at any time due to inexperience, so he may need a bit of guidance when the time is right.

Without sounding too stupid - can you tell me how to guide him? His "bits" are not even poking out at all (sorry too much info) !!

How old is your dog? again not talking disgusting here, but is he used to being 'handled' if not he may not let you help - I had a dog once that never managed it.........lol.

Ok we have a change !! He is trying, but not reaching the spot so to speak. No he isn't used to being handled and when I did try he yelped and jumped off. He is only out a little bit too is that ok ? Sorry but never had to take too much notice as things just went ahead and were done !! He is 23 months, bitch is 3 and slightly small than him.

Does she stand ready for the pups when they try and mount her, or does she just wander off? If you really think she is ready (you've obviously had pups from her so you will know if she is ready or not), it could well be that she doesn't want that particular dog to mount her.
For a maiden dog I always leave them in a confined area on their own - in a run or a room where you can watch very closely WITHOUT them being aware that they are being watched. Usually, when left to their own devices, the dog relaxes and works things out for himself. As soon as he enters the bitch, make sure you can get to them immediately. If you have a second mating, he will be keen enough not to mind your "help", and from then on ensure you are always "hands on" as he must get used to being handled.
Just occasionally, though, a bitch will simply not allow a certain dog to mate her. One of my bitches just loves my dog, and at her last season I had two abortive journeys of 100 miles each to mate her to a champion dog. She growled and in the end snapped at him, and we had to give up. The only way she was going to get mated was to my dog, and when I arrived home 3 hours later she ran to him and was tied within 2 minutes.

OK not sure whats going on, bleeding has stopped she is very flirty but won't stand, when he tries to mount she pulls away growling, too early I guess ?

I thought she was ready - she stood lovely this afternoon and we had a 15 minute tie so fingers crossed. We will try again in 48 hrs
Thanks to everyone
