Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Working Strain Cocker Spaniel
- By guest [gb] Date 22.04.02 11:17 UTC
I am looking for breed information etc. on the working strain Cocker Spaniel as I acquired one six months ago but not his papers (re-homed).

I can find plenty of info on the show strain but nothing on the working. I have also been told by a friend that my "Toby" is a Lecranza (excuse spelling), but also can't find anything on this either.

I only want to find out for curiosity's sake and to be able to answer people when they say "what is he". I think he's a working strain but not completely sure.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Many thanks,
Fran (& Toby)

Hi Fran

Do you perhaps mean "Lochranza"? This is a very famous Cocker show kennel & produced many, many Champions in the past. Not many litters are bred by Lochranza now although the kennel is still continuing in a small way. If your Toby looks like a Lochranza, then he's definitely not a working Cocker. Working Cockers have broader skulls & shorter ears than the show-type Cocker & also carry very much less coat. You can see photos of working Cockers by clicking here. Does your Cocker resemble any of these dogs? If not, then he probably descends from a show strain

Thanks Jane,

From your web site I would say Toby looks a bit like FTW Parkbrech Loop fascially and like FT Ch Jasper of Parkbreck. He certainly doesn't have the hair of a show cocker, so I will assume he is a working strain cocker - anyway he's lovely and I can now hopefully tell people what he is when they ask. I couldn't get the pictures on your site to enlarge so it was difficult but I can send a picture of Toby to you by email if you want to let me have your address. Oh, and thanks for the correct spelling of Lochranza. I can't imagine he came from them, but friends here in the Channel Islands had one of their bitches about 7 years ago (unfortunately she had a brain tumour at 5 years old and had to be put to sleep), they say that Toby looks exactly like her.

Thanks for your help, and please let me know if you know of any other sites where there are good pictures or information on working cockers.

Hi Fran

The site I gave you a link to isn't mine - it's one of the top Working Cocker kennels & had lots of photos so I thought it was the best one to direct you to :-) I have show Cockers - if you click on my name at the top of the message, it'll take you to my email address & website url. Please feel free to send me a photo of Toby - I'd like to see him. I'll see if I can find some more Working Cocker sites too, though you could probably come up with some more yourself by entering "Working Cockers" into a Search Engine like Google
