I have a 16 month old dobermann, i left him last night to go to the shop was only gone for about 1 hour, when i came back he had helped himself to a loaf of bread from off the kitchen worktop,  can somebody please tell me how i can stop him jumping up on the sides and also jumping up other people. He only seems to jump up at other people when he gets excited. thanks von

Hi

yep mine does that too..easiest way is to not leave things on the worktop! I know its tricky!! I also try and always wipe down the worktop with something especially clean smelly to deter her!!  One of my parents' dogs not only stole things from the work top but also learnt how to open the bread bin!!!! :-)

what is the best way to punish him when he does get on work top so that he knows its wrong.

There is no way to punish him for it. You can only prevent it happening. You could try sticking double-sided sticky-tape to the surface - dogs don't like getting their paws on that. Or have lots of empty tins stacked on their so that if he puts his feet up they fall down and startle him. But any deterrent has to appear to come from the worktop, not from you.

The best way of all is never to leave food out there in the first place - more hygienic as well.

i will try the tape and tins hopefully it will work, my son is the worst for leaving his chocolate bars on the side half eaten then when he comes to get it again he has a tantrum as its gone, i keep telling him not to leave it there as i know that our chocolate is no good for dogs,

Children (and husbands!) can be harder to train than dogs - and yet they understand our language and we can explain exactly what we want. Dogs cope with we silly people very well, considering.

My dobe is 7 months old and he has started doing this (probably as he is alot taller now and can reach), he also takes things from the work top.  My boys have always put things up there out of his way, but now he can reach with ease.  They have now decided to put things on the stairs out of his way, as they are too lazy to put them upstairs where they belong.  Mine also takes things from my clothes line and clothes horse, specially socks and my bras, then he runs around the garden like a mad thing!!!!  This is his last attention seeking thing that he does, if all else fails, it's like he thinks I know that will get her, the washing!!!!  He stands in my garden looking into the house and holding whatever in his mouth.

A Blue Peter tip, don't know if it works or not but worth a shot. Get some double sided sticky tape and put across just where dog's frount paw's go then when dog jump's up he get's a tacky feeling on his paw's that he don't associate with owner but with jumping up. Viv

My 12 month lab does this with clothes from the line but only socks and underwear, never big flapping sheets or the sorts of things you would expect. He ebhaves exactly as you describe and it's almost impossible to get things back! We're just trying to keep stuff out of his way and hoping he'll grow out of it...
