Topic Dog Boards / Health / Dry Eye in my Cavalier

I have a year old CKCS who was diagnosed with dry eye a few months ago.  It's a lifelong condition requiring (at the moment) eye ointment administered twice daily.  It's gone through on our pet insurance which is with the Kennel Club.  He is not KC registered but when I looked into it they seemed quite favourable. The ointment lasts anything from 4-6 weeks and costs about £50 per tube and he has a schirmer eye test every couple of months, again all covered on the pet insurance.  Of course now I've had to claim I notice that they pay up to £6,000 for one condition and I worked out that if he has to continue with twice daily eye ointment forever then this figure would have been reached when he is maybe 8/9 years of age.  Hopefully he will live much longer than this so I will have to pay this myself (not the end of the world I know).  Does anyone have any experience of dry eye in Cavaliers.  I understand it's hereditary so his mum or dad would have had it and the vet tells me that if he responds well (which so far he has) then we can reduce the frequency of the eye ointment but I'm interested in other experiences.  Also there is an American Cocker Spaniel in the park where we walk regularly who has the same condition and whilst he's older than Oscar he has really bad eyesight due to this condition and can only see things when they are right up close!  Advice much appreciated.
