- By ClaireyS Date 14.09.04 10:38 UTC
I was looking at a friends springers pedigree, it had a few FTch (which I know of) in it and a few FTW which I have never heard of, can anyone tell me what this means please ?

Thanks

Claire

FTW = Field Trial Winner

The term is not strictly used by the kennel club on official pedigrees, but most breeders include in there own pedigrees.

A FTW may have won a Novice, an All-Aged or an Open so it doesnt really reflect the level of achievement.

No problem.

FTW on a pedigree can be a bit controversial. Some breeder use red ink for them, which I dont think is strictly appropriate. Other breeders dont even bother to note the FTW's. I also know of breeders that only use FTW for an Open stake winner.

Hi Havoc
mine has a couple of FTW on his pedigree, but in black not red -  out of interest how does a dog become a FTCH?

Spaniels need to win two seperate Open stakes. (They qualify for Opens by winning a Novice or All-Aged stake)

Retrievers need to win over 3 days worth of Open stakes. (Some Opens are over 1 day, and others are over 2 days depending on whether 12 or 24 dogs running) At least one of the stakes has to be open to Any Variety retriever. You qualify for Opens in the same way as spaniels.

I believe that HPRs and Pointers / Setters qualify the same way as spaniels, but stand to be corrected.

In all cases, winning the Championships will also qualify for FTCh.

Additionally Retrievers have to be certified that they will sit quietly at a drive and retrieve from water. I think that spaniels are also required to retrieve from water.

Clear as mud?! ;-)

I've also seem FTW to mean Field Test Winner.
