Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / When do they start to show?

Hi all
My friends eldest son took their JRT out for a walk when she would have been on about day 11 of her season and his friends SBT mounted her. The boy said that he didn't think that a mating had taken place but a few weeks later their bitch's nipples started to swell.
My friend has taken her to her vet and was basically told to go home and wait.
If she is pregnant she would be about 35-40 days is my guess. Appart from swollen nipples and being a bit more clingy she is no different than before.

As you can imagine my friend is very upset and worried about this because if her bitch is pregnant they will probably run into compications with the father being so much bigger, what she doesn't want to happen is the dog to go into labour while she is at work.

At what point of pregancy do dogs start to show signs if any and is there any other way she could find out if she is pregnant?

She also looked into the injection but her vet told her that the risk to the dog was to high and he wouldn't give it and she phoned my vet and was told that she was too late, they will only give it 3 days after a mating.

Her son didn't tell her about the incident untill the dogs nipple stated to swell and that was already 2-3 weeks after it had happened.

Thanks Debbie

Want to post on this but feel I'm better off keeping my thoughts to myself.
Hope everything works out

Well obviously what will be will be now. They usually start to show around 5wks into pregnancy, when she is fed you will notice her ribs expand and then as the days go on her loins will fill out. By the time you can scan (5wks) you will know anyway.  If she is pregnant you need to inform the vet when labour commences, in case of problems. Enlarged nipples are not a true sign of pregnancy, she may well have a phantom.

why dont you tell us where your friend is and maybe some1 will know if there is a person in the area that does scans,  that is a good way to find out and you can also see if the pups are going to be big

The bitch can be spayed, and thereby the pregnancy terminated, I beleive right up to six weeks or so into whelp.

... which could be a much safer option than letting the pregnancy continue, both for the health of the mother and the welfare of the pups.

Good luck.

You say your freind works....is she prepared to take time off for the whelping AND for the first few weeks until it is safe for them to be left?If not I suggest as Brainless says,a termination.

Hi all
Yep shes prepared to take time off from work. I said to her about having her dog speyed but she hasn't of yet so i dont think that she plans to.

She lives in North London.

My concern is for a wonderful little dog that could be at risk. I do think that she should have her scaned.

I saw the dog yesturday and she hasn't put on any weight around her middle.

Thanks Debbie
