Can anyone reccomend a spray or conditioner for a knotted coat.

My pup get's brushed every day, but she still manages to get knots underneath her armpits, (even worse when she gets wet from walks) and it is a right struggle to get them out as she is very sensitive. (As we all would be) !! Sometimes it can take up to an hour to get them out. ie, 10 mins combing and 10 mins rest.

She is a heavily coated black..

Any reccomendations???

Hi,
I had problems with Schnauzers, collies, & a Yorkie. I went ahead & scissor-cut the areas. No one would see them anyway & dogs seemed much happier. My Yorkie had her belly & armpits trimmed really short, then her hair just cascaded down the sides. Made life much easier. :D

Hi N

Would have e-mailed you privately but having real problems with my e-mails at present and I've got over 79 to read now :(

You can buy a dematting rake which has long blades/teeth and is great for getting knots out of Cocker coats, as the last thing you want to do is cut it even if it is in India's armpits :)

Have a look at your local pet shops if my e-mail was working I could scan mine in and you can see what it looks like :(

I'll bring it over when I come in two weeks ......

Bye for now

Hi Derryn

Going to take some time to get through your e mails then !! I have a de tangle comb with long and short teeth, is that similar to the rake?? The problem is it seems to matt right to the skin, and its difficult to get out..poor India is not happy with her mummy right now!! The Blue's seem to be so much easier..

Hi Natasha

Yes what a nightmare I'm going to be so behind with everything :)

What you have does sound the same as what I have for getting Bart's knots out. Maybe your only option would be to carefully trim them out as Jane has said :)

See you soon

Derryn ;)

Hi Natasha

There's no reason why you can't thin out a small area under the arm-pit with your thinning scissors - it won't be visible when you show your girl & she will feel a lot more comfortable. I used to do this with a heavily coated dark blue & it made life a lot easier for her (& me!) If you really don't want to do this, then I find a spray with Shaws Coat Oil every few days will keep mats at bay (it must be thoroughly rinsed out before a show though)
