Hi everyone its me again!!! ive had my baby basset  2 weeks now and ever since getting her noticed she itches alot around her head and shoulders.  When we looked very closely it looks like tiny flakes of dandruff. Rang the breeder who dint give me much and said she had not had any other new owners report anything ( but said she'd not heard from them all anyway) So when we took her for her first jabs at the weekend we planned to mention it to the vet. But the vet noticed it first and said it could be mites especially if the litter was kept on straw which i dont know if they were or not. The vet prescribed us Strong hold treatment and said if no improvement when we come back for 2nd lot of jabs she will have to investigate further as it could be an allergy of sorts :-(. Obviously am worried about this and the cost etc. What do you guys think?

Sounds like Walking Dandruff to me. They look like little tiny dandruff flakes but are actually a little mite. They are itchy. There's a special shampoo she would need to be treated with and all her bedding, etc washed. But should clear up if that is what it is.

This mite is actually the rabbit mite, so if the breeder had Rabbits on their property or you have them where pup has access then that could be the source of infection.  It i8s a parasite caught the same way as fleas or head lice in kids, just one of those things but a nuisacne at the time.  The stronghold should treat it OK, as it will even kill mange mite.

Thanks for this - asked the breeder about rabbits and she said said no. I dont know much about stronghold but she had her treatment nearly a week ago. should it have worked by now or am i not giving it enough time?

HI, give it more time, until a week after  after the second dose of Stronghold - if it was some kind of mite - then the Stronghold will almost certainly work fine.

Also, does anyone know where you can buy Stronghold via the web - or do you have to get it from a vet?
