I have a ckcs bitch who has matted fur behind the ears.  I brush her every other day.  I am always cutting bits of matted fur off her which seem to appear during the day or over night.  I was going to get her clipped all over to get rid of the matted fur and then try to keep her ears in order once its started to grow back.  My question is: will her fur grow back just the same again all over.  I know its not a breed that isn't usually clipped but she is a family pet not a show dog.  tks

Generally no, once a dog is clipped its hair will never regrow the same again. Spaniels in particular seem to go soft, woolly and curly and even more likely to mat. I'm sure one of the professional groomers we have on the forum will be able to advise you on what action you should take.

Please do not get her clipped it will never back correctly & can make her coat woolly & even harder to look after

You need to find a good groomer to sort out your dogs coat without using clippers, they will be able to trim her ears & free them of knots using combs & scissors. Then she needs a thorough groom once a week & a daily comb/brush through everyday if she has lots of coat

Failing that get iin touch with her breeder & they should be able to help you

Has anyone had experience of a pup that's had to have its coat shaved? Do you know if the adult coat tends to come through normally? At the moment the coat has almost re-grown (it was done 8 weeks ago), but it is a lot darker than the rest.

In my breed cocker spaniels which im sure is simular to ckc coats . they go wooly curly just like a sheep . We have a forum just for cockers that give advice mabe theres one for cavs . your options to stop this happeneing is to use thinning scissors try to keep the fur trimmed and when you bath her put conditioner on her . I also add serums i use human ones as theres not alot of difference in them .Dry the dog and  you will find your dog has alot smoother fur easyier to manage . I will see if i can find a forum to help you . clipping isent an easy option keeping up with it is pretty hard as fur does grow quick . plus a little effort will make your dog into a real beauty please try to keep her looking lovely .

Ive just had a read up on cav grooming and they say dont cut the fur at all so mabe its worth putting a few products threw her hair see if that makes a difference .

The only place that scissors should be used on Cavaliers is ti trim the pad hair under the foot, however some dogs do have very long slippers(foot feathers) & trimming these in a pet makes sense. One of my show dogs has 2 inch long slippers.

Clipping does make the cost go woolly & a friend who grooms for a living will never clip a cavalier she is trying to get a cavalier's coat back to some sort of normality. She has to use loads of condition both wash out & leave in. She's now trying Quistel & the owner uses the spray daily & it looks like it might be working

My show dogs get normal grooming in between shows & the day before shows they get a full bath & leave in conditioner & are popped into a drycoat. The coats seem to make the coats more silky as well as flatten now the coat & stopping it getting messed up when the boys sleep upside down
