Labradors, dog or bitch?

Bitches come into season at anything between six monthly to yearly intervals and at that time have their minds very much on mating with any dog they can find

Dogs do not come into season but are interested in bitches all the time.

Bitches are sometimes a little harder to housetrain.

Dogs can be a little more territorial in their guarding instincts

Some say bitches are not so loving although I have never found that.

Again, some say dogs are easier to train but again, that is not something I've found.

Dogs can be more direct in their approach where bitches can be rather more devious!!! (Just like humans!)

If you intend to work your dog then you must be aware that a bitch will possibly not be available at the very time when you need her.

Time and again, when people come into the dog club men walk in with bitches and women seem to almost always have dogs. (I used to have dogs but brought my first bitch over 35 years ago and would now never go back to dogs!)

At the end of the day it is a very personal thing and something no one can decide for you.

Best wishes, John

Well we've got our first dog after having three bitches over the past 25 years he is adorable as have all our bitches been .If we were to get another I can honestly say at the moment I'm not sure what I would choose, they are all so different.I'm sure you'll love whatever you decide on.
Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Ive got one of each, and find they are both as loving as each other.  My only observation would be that the bitch is a little more 'sly'.  What you see is what you get with the dog, wheras the bitch can be a little more cunning:)  Mind you I dont think thats necessarily a bad thing.

LOL

The late breeder of one of my BC's always used to say "bitches were greasy"meaning they would try to get anyone & everyone to stroke & treat them ;)

Must say i have found that to be true ;)

Labrador bitch pups tend to sell much more quickly than the dogs, so if you want to have a choice of bitch puppies you may need to book ahead. However, if you want a dog you should be able to get a choice from a well bred litter without having to make a pre-booking. (Certainly with working bred pups - may not be the case if you want a show dog)

I'd say that a competent trainer will do equally well with either sex, but a poor trainer will usually find bitches a bit easier being a bit less boisterous.
