Hi all
I was just wondering how much other people are charged by their vet for spaying.
When i first got Buffy in January this year my vet told me that it would cost £97 but when i phoned yesturday for a friend i was told that a spay cost £225.
Not sure if this is the normal cost or not.
Thanks Debbie

It depends on the area of the country and the size of the breed. I paid £90 (including my multiple-dog discount) for one of my bitches 5 years ago, so I would expect to pay more now.
:)
We payed about £180 for a spay of a less than 20kg bitch and £220 for a btich that weighed over 25kg at the time. It's also at the descretion of the vet, it says on the board in our vets £120 for a spay but there are loads of extras such as nurse care, observation, medication and optional blood tests(liver and kidney function etc.)
Hope this helps.

I payed at the Veterrinary Vaccination clinic that do cut price neutering and vaccinations £103 plus antibiotic and pain killing injections £116.81 Total. She came in just under the 20kg price range being my smallest bitch, otherwise it would have been another £10. This is the cheapest in my area, at my usual vet who is by no means dear it would have been £150. This is Bristol.
Thanks for your replys so far, it seems then that speying is expensive all over. We are in London.
My friends dog is a jack russle so weighs next to nothing, i expect to pay a bit more for my 2 as they are large breed.
I wonder tho if this is the reason that so many people don't spey their dogs.
Debbie

It wouldn't enter into my thinking, there was no need to spay my bitch, but I like to spay all my bitches at 6 or 7 when they are fit and well, once their breeding lives are over. this is mainly to avoid dealing with possible pyometra in an elderly bitch later, and my own conveneince (fewer bitches in season each year). I feel by this age any neagative aspects of the procedure are less likely as the bitch has fully matured and developed in her systems, ahd I am in fact imposing a menopause which bitches do not normally have.
I now have 3 of my five girls spayed, the most recent one will be 7 in a months time, so all veterans.

Brainless: was this recently you had one of your girls spayed?? I know the veterinary vaccination clinic has been taken over by a well known vet group and their prices seem to be a bit more than before when Mr Rowe was there. We may have to have one of our girls spayed, depending on her next season, but my normal vet wants £200+, if it's an emergency spaying it will be more!! (my vet is the 'well known' one in Henbury)

I have just left Spice with our vet to be spayed today. The estimate based on her weight of 18.5kg was £140. I'll let you know later the final bill when I collect her. We live in Hampshire. There have been 'half price offers on spaying' in our local paper with another vet,but I would rather stick with the one we know and have her registered with.
It wasn't very nice leaving her there today, but she went in o.k. following a bassett hound who is also in for 'his op' ;)
Jacqueline.

It was two or three weeks ago!
The pet vaccination clinic based in the birmingham area charge £55 for a spay plus an additional £10 if the dog is over 40kg. Also additional £10 for pain relief.
My own vet in Wolverhampton charge £167 for bitch spay - think this is increased in a bigger bitch.

Do think other things other that the cost of the op should come into the equation, does the vet who did the op offer a 24 hour follow up service. What sort of anaesthetic do they use. Will they offer pain control?
i paid £120 for tess to be spayed, she weighs 30 kilos, she had to go back 24 hours after being spayed then again at 5 days and then at 10 days to have the stitches removed, for jack to be casturated it cost £95 and he weighs just under 20 kilos he had to go back on the same day intervals as tess, other vets in my area are dearer for spaying than what i paid

Spice's bill today was £140,if she needs painkillers I am to take her back for them, they don't automatically give any.She is 'relaxed' at the moment really dozy, but rolling over for a tummy rub everytime we go near her :D She goes back, providing we have no problems in the meantime,in 10days for stitches to be removed.Walks on lead only until then! try telling that to a b.c. who plays footie at every opportunity!
Jacqueline. :)
p.s. my dentist appointment today wasn't so kind he wants £280 for a crown

and I got told I'm redundant as of yesterday evening at work so I'm not too happy at the mo'.

We have just looked into getting our 6 year old male newfoundland and 5 year old female newfoundland done, the charge for the girl will be £180 and the male £120, we will not be breeding from her and he suffers every 6 months with her seasons so we have come to the conclusion it would be best for both of them.

<<<<<<<<<<<£10 for collar which she never wore>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
:o The vetenary nurse gave me one whan I took Beano in because he was making him self sore from licking after being castrated.I still have it. Have kept it just in case!!!!!
Lea :)

We had to pay for a collar too ...Hudson STILL managed to get all his stitches out though  :D He healed within 10 days despite that ;)

Tara had a collar when she was spayed. It was one that her collar threaded through. I put it on her (for the first time) as I needed to take older dog out for a VERY short walk - 5 minutes maximum. When I came back she had ripped the collar off :D Fortunately she was a very good girl after that, didn't lick her stitches and we managed without one, without any problems :)

hiya debbie,
i paid £85 for my lab to be done a few months back-she was 23kg at the time. Reading some other posts about the cost, i think that was pretty cheap!!
HI asked at my vets today and they charge £90.75 i said is that for everything they said yes total cost, looks like my vets are pretty cheap compared to most, I must add though my vets do a well dog scheme where you pay £54 a year and that covers you for any consultant fee all i pay for is medication which over a 12 month period saves me a awful lot as they charge £29 just to see a vet
regards polly_45
We charge
$77 for under 10kg
$88 for 10-20kg
$99 for 20-30kg
$101 for 30-40kg
$112 for 40kg+
Pyo's cost more, as do pregnant spays. Dogs which have been adopted from charities get a discount (40 quid I think)
These prices should be in pounds but for some reason my pound sign isn't working. The price includes a pre-spay check (mandatory), premedication (usually ACP and Torbugesic), painkiller (Rimadyl), the anaesthetic (Rapinovet induction and isofluorane maintenance), the op itself, a check up 2 days later and suture removal. We do charge for Eliz collars, but they're only about 2 quid. I usually give them to the owners just in case, but if they don't use them i refund them. In my experience, most dogs leave their stitches alone (different story with cats). Buster collars can really distress them, so I only use them if absolutely necessary. If a vet is charging 10 quid for a buster collar, I'd query that. Is it gold plated? :-)
Our practice is in North London, in a fairly affluent area. I'm surprised at some of the prices quoted here, although I doubt we make much profit on bitch spays. We're a small practice (1 vet, 1 full time nurse, 1 part time nurse), and if we have a bitch spay we tend not to book in any other ops so they get total concentration. Well, obviously every patient does, but we recognise that a bitch spay is a major operation, some practices seem to do them almost on a conveyor belt. It's amazing how many people think that we tie the fallopian tubes, and are surprised when told that the op is a full ovario-hysterectomy. You'd think they would do a bit of research!
Slightly off topic - we castrated a Dane last week as he had a malignant lump on one testicle. His owner (a man), asked us if there was any way we could insert prosthetic testicles! Surely he should be worried about other things at that time! The dog's fine, although he has no prosthetic testicles!

My vet quoted £105 for my Mastiff 2 years ago which I thought was quite cheap.
He is a good vet I've used him for years.
He qouted £57 to castrate a JRT and £65 to spey.
On the other hand he quoted £42 to spey a ferret and another vet I sometimes use quoted £27.50.
Where's the sense in that???
The other vet's quotes for dogs were higher than my regular vet.
I think that having a 'good' vet operate on your dog should account for a lot.
I know that finance has to come into it at some point. I once had a rescue Dobe I took in castrated, by a different vet because he was cheaper, the dog ended up with an infection and it cost a lot more in the long run. And the poor dog suffered. Now I stick to the vet I know I've been using him for upwards of 20 years now.
P.s. If your friend is on any benefits she may be able to get her dog speyed with the Dogs Trust. It's worth asking your vet. It would then cost £25 irrelevent of the size of the dog.

wispa will be about £160,00 the weight from 20KGS to 40 kg her weight is 32 kg.that was the price i got from my vet yesrtday
It costs more to spay rabbits/guinea pigs/ferrets/chinchillas etc because it's a much more difficult operation to perform than a cat spay or even a bitch spay. They are more difficult to anaesthetise, and as they are so small the operation is extremely "fiddly" and takes a very long time. Rabbits and chinchillas in particular are much more prone to post-op infections/complications.
Castrations are more difficult in small furries as well, as the inguinal canal remains open in these animals, so testicles can disappear up into the abdomen very easily, and it's very difficult to get them down again!
Some people seem to equate the price of the op to the percieved "value" of the pet, not taking into consideration the relative difficulties of the actual procedure. Also bear in mind that most vets will spay many many cats and dogs over a year, compared to perhaps 2 or 3 chinchillas, and practice does make perfect (or nearly!)
If you have small furries it's well worth finding a vet who specialises in them, as many vets don't like performing the procedures.
I think i had better start saving. I have decided to wait to spey my girls untill they are fully grown. My vet has said that it will be £225 for my lab and possibly more for my bullmastiff. But in a year or 2 when they will be ready it will probably be more.
Oh well, still cheaper than having an unwanted litter of pups to look after and feed. :)
Debbie
PS. Thanks all for your replys.

The cost of my ferrets castration was £24.01.
£7.51 for the OP and £16.50 for the aneasthetic.
My vet says it takes 7 minutes to operate unless there are complications.
He is a ferret/small animal specialist though.
He neutered a male rat for me 7 years ago.
He has also neutered two of my friends Meerkats.
I know there are no 'guidelines' for vets but how can one charge £60 for a ferret castrate and another charge £24.01???
The vet who charges £60 isi in Hexham and 'says' he charges so much because he has done a specialist course on small animal surgery.
Or it could be that the people who live in Hexham happen to be made of money.

Does the location of the vets have any impact?
Practices, like houses are more expensive in certain areas than others, so is council tax, parking etc etc etc so there are a myriad of factors in the equation.

that the end of the days vets have over head like any other business, the cost on spaying a bitch would not worry me,as long as i can trust my vet to do a very good job and care for them during the op and after care,i got 100% trust in mine vet,
plus i would not go to another vet just for spaying, beacuse it cheaper, where we live there a vet doing half price spaying/neuting of cat and dog at the moment, the question is why his he doing it,is it beacuse ita new business in town trying to catch new trade, what they stander like, and care,
i would stay with my vet 100%
