There are so many different colours of Mals, Whats the best colour to breed with a white Mal to make little white mal pups to get pure white, apart from another white.Would it be Red And white as I have heard that the red pigment is the weakest,

Many Thanks
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 02.09.04 18:33 UTC
Ah, that would explain why you have now got a red and white, Dez :( 3 Mally pups must be quite a handful
- By Malakai [gb] Date 02.09.04 18:47 UTC
Have you thought of actually learning about the breed before breeding? People have tried to offer you advice and point out the problems you are rapidly approaching by having pups so close together but you have obviously chosen to ignore the voice of experience.

Do us all a favour, if money is all you are interested in, buy and sell cars!!!

What are you guys on about? i dont have three mals, my sister has a red and white girl wich she resecured as the owner was just leaving her out all day, im not intrested in money with my pups and work very hard with them in the ring and out.

Why do u all think this way, the red mal has come first in av working pup and second in av graduate. We love our mals very much our mals have come second and third but not first.

Cant any one ask a simple question with out being slandered.
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 02.09.04 19:26 UTC
What does *resecured* mean Dez? Do you mean rescued? Did she get the papers for it? If so, are there endorsements on the pedigree? If so, she won't be able to breed from her.

To be honest, I would have thought your initial question would have been better asked on a forum where there are experts on breeding Malamutes
- By dez_154 [us] Date 02.09.04 19:33 UTC
yes i mean rescued sorry, yes she does have papers and yes it has endorsements on her until she is hip scored and eye tested but im not sure even if shes going to breed with her, Maybe i asked the question wrongly....

If for example u have a girl white how do the pigmaents work?  red and white boy with a white girl = ?

grey and white boy with a red and white girl=?
red and white boy with a grey and white girl=?

I am just curiouse how the pigments work?

Now Can u answer me a question why do u go mad and shout when i ask a question i dont think i will askanmore if i get a reply like i did...

Maybe theres someone i can send your reply too...
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 02.09.04 19:45 UTC
I have no idea how the pigmentation works Dez ..no idea whatsoever :)

I haven't shouted at you ..nor has Malakai. What you HAVE to understand is that we care deeply about our chosen breed and when someone talks about breeding his long coated Malamute puppy (on a previous post) and then goes on to say he now has a red (and I believe you originally said it was yours and not your sisters) and then starts asking about how to breed a white Malamute, we are naturally worried.

Long coated Malamutes are a breed fault and should not be bred from.

You shouldn't really even be thinking about breeding until you have experienced Malamutes up to the age when they are mature at the very least! Your pups are still babies, they haven't gone through the teenage months yet.

Learn about your breed and be happy showing the pretty grey one for now :)

Oh and your sister will NOT be able to breed from the red without getting the endorsements lifted :)
- By Malakai [gb] Date 02.09.04 19:34 UTC
Fair enough... so you aren't planning on breeding a long coated Mal then? Or intent on breeding Mals for colour rather than conformation? That's fine then :) I'm sorry I obviously got the wrong end of the stick :)

Look forward to meeting your pups in the ring - haven't seen them yet ;)

Aah yes, I know the dog - he pipped mine in the Challenge for RBD :).... and if my memory serves me right, he wasn't a long coat :)
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 02.09.04 19:55 UTC
No, he has a usual, stand out Malamute coat :)
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 02.09.04 19:48 UTC
Sorry to but in but what on earth is a Crufts reserve champion, and are we talking Mals who as far as I know have or have had until recently only an interim standard and no CC's on offer.
- By ice_cosmos Date 02.09.04 19:55 UTC
Yes they are talking about Mals - the KC are giving them CC status in 2006 - even though the members of the breed club voted not to have CC's within the breed :(
- By Malakai [gb] Date 02.09.04 19:56 UTC
I think Dez means Reserve Best Dog Jackie :) and yes, you're right, Mals still have no CCs! For now!!! LOL
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 02.09.04 19:59 UTC
And this person Dez is breeding dogs for the show ring?
- By ice_cosmos Date 02.09.04 20:03 UTC
Dez owns two bitches who are approximately 8 months in age - he is looking at breeding them in the future as they are not endorsed. He also has (or his sister does) and red and white bitch (age unknown).
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 02.09.04 19:57 UTC
Dez means BOB . CCs are on offer from 2006
- By Malakai [gb] Date 02.09.04 19:50 UTC
Good :) Long coated pups can and do grow into their coats - I'm pleased she is doing well!
- By ice_cosmos Date 02.09.04 20:00 UTC
Dez,

Even though your long coated bitch may do well at exemption shows (where the judges do not often know the entire standard of the dogs they are judging), if you take her to a breed class under a judge who knows what they are looking for she will be binned as she is not correct.

Active del Biagio is not a long coated Mal ;)
- By dez_154 [us] Date 02.09.04 20:18 UTC
hi ice when i first had me mal everyone said she is long coat can i send u a pic of her see what u think

Thanks

Oh and where do i send it to?
- By ice_cosmos Date 02.09.04 20:39 UTC
Dez - I have emailed you. You should probably let Joan or Mel take a look at the photo as well, as they have both been in the breed longer than I have.
- By Malakai [gb] Date 02.09.04 20:45 UTC
I think you'll find Dez *knows* where to ask for an opinion based on years of breeding experience ;)
- By ice_cosmos Date 02.09.04 20:46 UTC
I know he does - but he hasn't been on there for a while.
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 02.09.04 20:47 UTC
Are you on there? :D
- By ice_cosmos Date 02.09.04 21:31 UTC
Yes :)
- By Malakai [gb] Date 02.09.04 20:55 UTC
He's been there several times today ;)
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 02.09.04 20:45 UTC

- By Melodysk [gb] Date 02.09.04 21:16 UTC
I have only been with the breed for a short time ...Hudson is only 3 in December ;)
- By huskymad [gb] Date 03.09.04 14:27 UTC
Hi Dez,
I have three malamutes, all wolf grey and white. Although  very different breed from the husky i have been told that the colour genetics work rather the same.

Although in the sibe and malamute world, white is allowed, alot of people find the colour undesirable. The rule goes for sibes and mals that if you mate a pure white (liver noses, eye rim) with a red and white, you will most likely produce whites, and red and whites. There is no definate statement that they will be either white, or just red, but could be a mixture of both.

However if you mate a pure white which has a  black nose and eye rim you may still produce, blacks and greys, as the pigmnet in the nose states that there is black pigment in the genes which are more dominant than the reds and whites.

To be honest there is no garantee, it really is up to you to do the best by the breed by having the necessary health checks, and if you decide to breed then it really is the luck of the draw if you produce white pups. As if you look into the pedigree , there may be all the permited colours in your dogs ancestry. This means that any of these colours can occur, as it is in your dogs genetics.

The most important thing to remember is that coat colour is not the most important thing when breeding. Your main concern should be to produce healthy pups from health tested parents, and that their temperment is second to none. Also if you are planning to breed, its a good idea to try and find potential homes. This time before the pups are  born will allow you  to vet prospective homes, so that when the pups are born you know that they have suitable homes to go to.
