Hi, I have a pregnant bitch (Border Terrier), She is due tomorrow & has been off her food since Monday night (it's now wed afternoon) there are no obvious signs of labour apart from her water broke yesterday. I have just taken her to the vet, they say if she hasn't had pups by friday then I must bring her in to be induced or pos C-section. I'm very worried that she won't eat, how can I let her not eat until Friday?? The vets seem very calm about it, but I'm not!! I hardly got any sleep last night. Am I right to panic? or am I just being stupid?. I really don't want my dog to go hungry!

Bitches often go off their food for a few days around whelping.  Some will eat until the last minute and snack between pups if allowed and others won't eat anything (other than the afterbirths) for a few days.  Provided she is still drinking, her temp. is not raised and you can still feel the puppies moving I would not be too worried about her not eating if she was mine.

What would worry me more is your comment about her "waters breaking".  I have only ever known fluid to be lost when the bitch is actually whelping and the bags are expelled.  If you are not happy contact your vet again but don't let your bitch know you are worried as everyone around her should be calm and relaxed - especially once she goes into full labour.
