Topic Dog Boards / General / When is the best time?

When is the best time to get a puppy. I have a just over 1 year old terrier, and want to get him a companion. He's well behaved generally, he does have his 'kevin' days though, but these are few and far between. Is there a certain age bracket that you should wait until, or would it depend on the certain dog?

I only ask as there is alot of experience on these boards, so im assuming you have had this question at somepoint yourselves.

We normaly leave 3 to 4 years between dogs but we have more than one so it does make a difference. Would still suggest you wait till your first dog is 18 months to 2 years old and mature in his out look, he will have to take a back seat when you get a new pup and put up with the pups behaviour so IMO it is best if the first dog is adult before you add another to the household.

Thanks Jackie :)

He is quite mature, but I know where you're coming from! :D

I got my newest addition when my elder dog was 18 months old.
He's quite chilled out and really good with others and in the house but Madam is a different kettle of fish alltogether!

I always say once the first one is house trained fully and obedience trained, then bring in another dog/puppy :)

Dollface when would you consider a dog was fully obedience trained, they seem to be fine one moment and then have a set back so when do you decided the dog is up to scratch. So at about what age and does it change with breed, I would say my breed is never fully reliable but are about as good as they are going to get by about 2 and half, some take a bit longer and a few never get there, so I guess if I waited for them to be obedient I would never have another puppy. :)

For me is when they are fully house trained and where you like for the obedience training. I like to have my dogs know the basics like sit, stay, down, come and maybe even walk at heel. Thats what I ment for basic obedience :) I have 3 out of 5 that walk at a nice heel, the other two still tend to pull and need reminders lol :D Just where i think someone feels comfortable to bring in another dog. I would def wait a year for sure before another puppy. just my personal opinion.
