Hi Kirsty,

I use rolled leather half-checks on my girls, for showing, every day use and training (OK, not much of that before anyone who knows me pipes up :D ).

If you search on Accolade Leathercraft, you can order them at a very reasonable price in all sorts of colours.  The rolled leather ensures minimum damage to coat around the neck.

How are your puppies doing?  Are they entered for any shows yet?

Oh thanks for that Marina, I've searched all pet shops and shows and was told they dont do leather half checks anymore, so now I know where to find them, :) I'm using the nylon half check but it is very wide, couldnt find a small width for a big dog :(

The best collar for training a puppy is IMHO a flat webbing one as investing in a leather one will be a waste of money as it grows.

I then put all my dogs into flat leather collars; good ones made from english bridle leather will last longer than your dog if cared for correctly; I find it unecessary to use half checks and I would never use a full check chain on a dog.

but make shaw it a quick release clip and not a  metal buckle one on the collar, incase of emergency,

Fagan has just snapped one of the quick release plastic things on his collar and he doesnt really pull, I gave his collar a light tug to get his attention and one of the plastic prongs bent so the collar came off and then it snapped off.  Ive just been out and bought him a nice flat webbing collar with a metal buckle no more plastic quick release things for me.

I would never use a quick release clip on a collar, buckles are fine especially with leather collars as in an emergency (which to me signifies getting caught in something) the leather would break; webbing on the othe hand rarely breaks.....................

after one of my dogs got court up on the dog guard with his collar in the car,and nearley hang himself which at the time driving back from the vet with him a distant of 2 1/2 mile, the only thing that safe him was the quick release beacuse the collar has twisted.

so none of mine dogs have collar on in or out, after that,no collars in cages,as well,
i would not of think with this emergency a leather collar would have break.it twist so tight that i could not get a knife or scissors under the collar,

We all have to live with our choices; have to say my dogs are never left alone with a collar on but they DO have collars on in the car just in case................

I recently witnessed a fatality with two dogs in the back of the car which I had to get out; could not have done this if they had not had collars on.
