GSD, Dobermans, Labs, Greyhounds, Whippets, Chihuahuas, Schnauzers, Standard Poodles, many hunting breeds, Danes, Saluki, Borzoi.....I like the looks on some and description of temperaments, but wouldn't like training the sight hounds in general. Love GSD, but not the hair. Like the big Poodles, very intelligent and stylish, but grooming. uggg. So far, my latest....my Doberman, I love everything about him except for his puppy things....into absolutely EVERYTHING....worse than any dog I ever saw. But other than that.....love em, love em, love em!

I'm going to have to say Samoyeds and Malamutes........but then again I'm bias! I love the Northern breeds. Sure they are a nightmare to train and they never ever listen to a word I say but still they are fantastic!
Charlene
Newfies are my fav breed.I have one at the moment and I love her to bits.

Oh gee wiz! Did you ask for one favorite breed? Ehhhhhh.....that's sooo hard. I can't do it. I have lots of favorite breeds. Hee hee hee. But I'm leaning toward my Dobe. We'll see if I still feel that way when we get through the puppy stage...if I survive it. LOL.

SHELTIES! Before I got my latest pup, I was looking around at other breeds, but nothing just seems as good to me. They're just perfect. They're so smart, they do well in obedience and agility, they don't have many health problems, most of them are not terribly high energy, they can live very long lives, they are big enough to be able to rough house with and not break but not so big so that they get in the way a lot, and they come in lots of colors so they don't all look the same! Also, they're way sweet and loving. I guess they're just perfect for what I"m looking for in a dog. I love a dog who can go out and run run run, but then come inside and lounge around if I'm busy. One of my profs in college had a sheltie and told me that "she hasn't gone to the bathroom alone in 10 years". They love to follow around their owner. The only bad thing I can even possibly think of is their barking problem. There are definitely exceptions, but needless to say, I have known a few in my day who are barky.
On top of Shelties, I also have a thing in my heart for Greyhounds. There's nothing like coming home to an ex-racer snuggled up on the couch. No, they don't typically make obedience or agility dogs, but it's nice to have an occasional couch potato.
Anyways, I love Shelties, and I'm sure I'll have them my whole life! Unless something better comes my way, which I dont' see happening!
Staffies, greyhounds, whippets, dobies, miniature bull terriers and french bulldogs. Would be my dream come true if I could have at least one of each! Half isn't too bad though :)

Give me a short haired dog any day...My favourite dogs are Brindle Boxers and Weimaraners...any of the guns dogs are just lovely and loyal to their owners and brilliant with kids if brought up properly...

You've all upset me now - Is nobody going to say dalmatians?
By Carrie
Date 29.04.04 20:59 UTC
Bullphi,
I haven't been around too many Dalmations. But I will say that I think they're exceptionally beautiful and look very jaunty and sweet. Tell us about yours if you have one.
Carrie

Dalmatians are much like dobes in temperament - sensitive and flighty. Easily upset. Terrific sense of humour and fun. Mentally puppies till they're about 10 years old. You can't force them to do anything - they have to want to do it, so you need to outsmart them. Force will never be forgotten or forgiven. And they have a remarkable ability to continually shed clouds of white needles that penetrate your skin. You will never be free from short, white hair once you've owned a dalmatian, no matter how many years have passed since your last one, and how many times you move house ...
For the right owner, they're the best breed in the world. For the wrong owner, they're a nightmare.

Yes, I've heard Dalmations aren't an easy breed. Some breeds just take a little extra work and special handling. And then they are absolutely great.
That's interesting how you compare them to Dobermans. I agree with Dobermans being sensative, but flighty....they should be steady and stable, level headed, fearless, not shy or nervous, just watchful... and so far, my pup is showing good, correct Doberman temperament. But yes, very, very sensative and I've heard that, that they don't forget anything severe.
I got a kick out of your description....the white hair that you can't get rid of, how they're puppies until they're 10....that's funny. I love the strong personality type dogs, comical and fun. You know....I can almost compare my chihuahuas to my Dobe that way. They are similar in that they're goofy, just plain goofy.
Carrie
Hi Carrie
Mine is a five year old puppy called Jasper. Jeangenie is absolutely right but missed out the bit about them stealing anything edible within reach! They do have an incredible sense of humour. If you laugh at something mine does he keeps doing it again and again. He's not the most obediantdog in the world but I wouldn't swap him - even for one of those collies on TV that can do all kinds of amazing stuff.
By Carrie
Date 29.08.04 00:35 UTC
Oh, I'm sorry Bullphi,
I just now saw your post following mine. Your dog Jasper sounds like a kick in the pants. That is funny how some have such a strong sense of humor. Jasper sounds like a little mischieveous one. LOL. My boy Lyric is obedient when it's a "training" thing that he's learned and he's pretty good otherwise. It's some of his mischieveous behavior things that he can show a bit of a stubborn streak. But part of it's my fault. He's just so darn cute sometimes....that Doberman expression...puppy face. I have a new nickname for him. It's Spoiled Rotten.

Basset Hounds, they really are fun to own.
Carol
The "bum waggle" of a Basset was enough for me! Oh....and the acquired deafness, stubbornness, fierce independance, sulkiness and huge amounts of affection too!! I agree Owl....huge fun! :D

Belgian Shepherds especially the Groenendael !- Rough Collies, Shelties, Deerhounds, Borzois anything with elegance really .
Has to be Border Collies but then I have two adorable boys. Other than that then Rotties and GSDs all for their intelligence good looks and loyalty. You cant do better. Anything large really.

Spanish Water Dogs - scruffy, mad, quiet, appealing, obedient, loyal, totally affectionate.
For a small dog, Pomeranian's, wicked characters, think that they are a big dog in a little dogs body, obedient, fun and real show offs.

Awww, where are all the Sibe lovers at? My favorite breed of all time is the Siberian husky. I don't think I'll ever love another breed as much as I love a beautiful Siberian. Following the husky are Alaskan Malamutes, American Eskimos, Samoyeds[sp?], German Shepard Dogs, and any other wolf-like dogs. I tend to love the erect ears and bushy tails of these breeds and fall for any dog that falls in that catagory. :) I just love the Northern breeds the most, but the Siberian husky will always be my number one.
