Topic Dog Boards / General / why won't he wee???
- By Lisam13 [gb] Date 31.08.04 09:05 UTC
Hello everyone

Hope you all had a wonderful bank holiday!!

Just a quick question......

We have been walking our pup now for 3 mths outside and he will only ever rarely wee on his walks. When he does I praise him loads and he gets lots of attention and strokes but 98% of the time he will come home dash in the garden and have a wee there???

Is there any reason for him not wanting to go or is he just a weirdo???

:D

Lots of puppies do this :) I think it is because they were trained to *go* in the garden in their first few weeks....don't worry, he WILL start weeing elsewhere..probably EVERYWHERE ;) :D

To a dog peeing is letting the world know you are about and ready to take on all comers, so pups and the less forward confident dogs will be careful where they announce their presence, some to the extent of only going at home unless they can't hold out any longer.

he will in time, then it will be every tree, post you come across to make his mark.lol

Ah, a walk round the block with copper takes an hour lol.  He pees on the bushes, the lamp posts, gate posts, car wheels, paper bags, plastic bags, other dogs poo (yuk), bin bags, wheelie bins, drains, bits of grass, bits of pavement etc etc etc.  How can one small dog store so much wee??  And no, he doesn't have a hump on his back :D

LOL. Barney is 3 in a couple of weeks and very rarely pees when he is out. Seems like my Lhasa has no Boxer in him :p He does however pee over Molly's in the garden!!

Wait until your puppy is a bit older and his hormones start to kick into action.  I bet he will start peeing on everything he sees and you'll wonder why you ever wished he would pee on his walk :-)

At leat he goes outside! Our new GSP puppy called Monty has about half an hour each day going every 2 minutes! (Not just wees!) He's gettin better. My mum and dad get cross with him for having an accedent but he's only 9 weeks. We've been told by the breeder to prase him and give him a treat when he does go outside. Take a few treats with you when you take hime for a walk. Give one to him when he does go when out for a walk and soon he'll start doing it anyway. From Phoebe

Hi Phoebe - the best book you can get to help with all aspects of training Monty is called "The Perfect Puppy" by Gwen Bailey. It covers everything from housetraining (her method works really quickly, provided the people concentrate properly on the puppy! ;) ) through lead training and socialisation to help you end up with an adult dog to be proud of. You're right that your parents shouldn't scold him for accidents in the house - he hasn't yet learned where is acceptable and where isn't. If they scold him he will get confused and housetraining will take longer.

A final point - it's best never to post your age on the internet. Most people are fine, but there are a few oddballs everywhere.

Good luck with Monty!

Just had to add to this one - my lad won't go in the garden and at a push will go in the paddock adjoining, he much prefers to go outside the boundaries - not complaining keeps me fit.

Alfie was exactly the same until about 7 months old - until he learnt the art of cocking:-) and now there's no stopping him.
