- By Guest [gb] Date 31.08.04 07:21 UTC
I have a lab x collie. who at home is excellent at obediance, he heels close to my heel and looks up at you, and does everything i ask him, when i ask him. But when we go down the shows witht he other 2 dogs we have, he changes, he ignores me and concentrates on the other 2 dogs, and he doesnt even want to work for treats or the ball that he loves to bits!! I want to so much compete in obediance as he has the potential.

P.S. the other 2 dogs must go, because they do well on the show ring too.

CAN ANYBODY HELP ME PLEASE!!!??!?!?!!?!?

Hi Guest
I would take him to smaller shows and leave the other two at home so you are on a one to one basis with him. If the other two dogs are out the way he should concentrate on you. It takes time........ Good luck... :D

Are you training at home in the presence of the two other dogs?  I can't quite understand what you are saying regarding him concentrating at shows with the other two dogs.  Are you taking them out of the car together, if the other two are left in the car while you work this one I can't see how he concentrates on the other two.

Depending on your answers to the above I would

1  Take out all three to a training area (park) and work them individually.

2  Take only your problem dog to a show, could even be a companion show, don't enter him just work him beside the rings within the atmosphere of the showground.

It sounds to me that he might be a bit stressed out by the occasion and is looking to your other dogs for reassurance.  Treat him gently and build his confidence slowly.

You can't MAKE him listen to you - but you need to be working on getting him to WANT to listen to you.  Have you ever gone to shows purely as a training excercise, used rewards in the show atmosphere etc?  Dogs do not generalise between one physical location and another - so a dog trained to sit at home, or in the club hall, will often have to relearn the behaviour on the street - and the same with obedience training and shows - there are so many different stymuli that YOU have to over come....
