on tuesday i bought a rabbit, we were told that he was a 4 month old french lop cross, he also had a breeders ring on one of his hind legs, as it was rubbing on his leg and we had no desire to show i took 'Bob' to the vets to have his mixy jab and the ring removed, i asked to keep the ring so that i could contact the British Rabbit Council to find out more about bob, (dob breed etc) does anyone know of an email/phone number of the BRC as all im bringing up is blanks all the sites ive been on to have no contact links, also can anyone explain the coding of the ring to me, as from guessing it looks as if bob was born last year, the start of the number is BRC03K*****
thanks

PS: think the 'K' after the numbers may refer to the ring size, not entirely sure, but they have different sizes for the different breeds, the K size is used for the minature lop..

I am sure it hasn't changed, and I cannot see why the bunny would have been rung if it was a cross.

What happens when you have rabbits is that you purchase the rings at the beginning of the year, and then you ring the young rabbits.  Each breed has a different size ring, and as long as the Rabbit is typical of it's breed it is extremely rare for there to be a p[roblem with it.

Now when breeding rabbits there is no pedigree database kept.  some breeders keep written records and give their rabbits names, or just identify them by ring number, but when you buy a rabit you don't normally get a pedigree, as it would be meaningless to anyone bt the breeder.

So you won't likely find out when the Rabbit was born, or even who his parents were, unless his breeder happened to make a note of it.  The only thing you can maybe find out is who the ring with that number was sold to, but I doublt it as it is likely to be private info.  Maybe the BRC would be willing to pass on a letter.

thank you for your replys, i mainly want to find out what breed he is and age really as we were told he was a french lop cross and that he was 4 months old, we also thought it was rather odd for a cross to be rung as did our vet, also when looking at the ring if he is indeed a french lop the ring now that it has been cut off is just over an inch in length, and i was wondering if the 03 refered to year born, we are now wondering if the info supplied is dodgy esp as we asked for a french lop or a french lop cross, mainly for the size because of the dogs a mini lop wouldnt survive the shock if the dogs managed to get to it  other than that bob is a lovely cuddly wabbit as is 'mop' his little guinea friend :D
