Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / POssible mating ??? CKCS...PLEASE HELP
- By Guest [gb] Date 30.08.04 16:21 UTC
I know this may sound abit like I am dumb but I do not know where else to ask. My bitch Cavalier KIng Charles Spaniel has been in season 7 days and although I have made sure she has been seperated from my male they managed to get to each other today whilst we were all in the garden. My dog mounted my bitch just as I jumped across to grab him.....they tied but after 30 secs they tried to pull away from eachother....they were stuck together for about 10-15 mins before she was finally relaxed enough to let him free. Will this cause a pregnancy ??? The reason I am so worried is that she had a litter with her last season (she was living with me then. she only came to live with us 2 weeks ago after her owner passed away).

Please help
Thank you.....Kerry

Yes, she could easily become pregnant.  The best thing to do would be to take her to the vet for injections.  The treatment usually used would be an injection at 3 days and another at 5 days, so that would be the first injection on Thursday and the second on Saturday.  Check with your vet that this would be the regime to use.

I would get to the vet as soon as if you don't want this possible pregnancy to go ahead, I think it is generally agreed that 2 litters 'on the trot' is not a good idea.
Keep us informed, i'm sure others will be along soon to advise too. :)

My Mother had a CKCS who had had one litter. She was accidently mated by a cocker spaniel on her next season.
My Mother duly got her the injection. This was at 4 years old by the time she was 7 she had died of liver cancer. The vet then admitted that the injection had been connected to the incidence of cancers in bitches. As the dog was only a small dog my Mother wished she had allowed the pregnancy to continue. My Mother never bred another litter and has since had all her dogs neutered. Even the daughter of the one that died.
This happened 9 yrs ago but my Mother still blames herself for giving Lady the injection. All because the pups would have been x-bred.

Know how you Mum feels but the bitch may well have dies aged 4 in whelp, all medication carries risks and unless there was proof that it was that injection that cause the problem then I would take it as the few of one vet, it could be just as likely if not more so that it was caused by walking down the road and taking in the lead from car exhausts.

Gemma got caught at about the age of 2. The dog next door jumped the fence (old dog, that you wouldnt have believed would get over the fence!!!!!!!!!!!) Took Gemma straight to the vet and got the injection.
She is 7 1/2 now, and still fine :)
