Do you mean a Maltese, or are they also known as Maltese terriers, ANYWAY, why dont you ring the kennel club and ask them to send you a list of repurtable breeders, some of these will have pups but i appreaciate your looking for a breed that doesnt crop up everyday, but deffinately speak to the KC.
Good Luck, Bullboy x

yeah they are known as Maltese Terriers and like most of the toy breeds they can be very hard to come by - particularly a bitch. This is because they only have very small litters and breeders hang on to the pups for longer than usual to 'run them on' before making their minds up - often keeping the bitches and maybe a dog pup too. the best thing for you to do is to contact the breed club and ask to have a list of reputable breeders then phone round - visit and put your name down for a pup from the breeder whose stock you like the best. Maltese are delightful little dogs with very sweet natures BUT that coat needs hours and hours of work spent on it and your pup will not look like those wonderful show dogs unless it has the same amaount of time and care lavished on it - not a breed I would reccommend for a novice 'coated breed' owner !!.

I agree the coat is a major factor when wanting to own this breed I am a lifelong lab person when went to visit a friend many years ago she had a litter of two maltese I fell in love with the pups and some weeks later she rang to say one was available I jumped in with both feet and went and brought one home the breeder taught me briefly how to manage the coat but I really didnt manage well with it as he had a particularly wooly coat which was why she didnt keep him for showing Bobby ended up always having a little woolly lamb cut every so often their eyes always need to be keept clean and nails cut as well It is easy to fall in love with the lovely faces but they are a dedicated specialst breed being a small dog too they can be injured easily . Bobby is lucky he has been brought up with a family of labs so is used to getting out of the way,he is tough too and up to recent months still walk a long way at nearly 14 yrs he sadly has had three heart attacks recently.
Also they do not like being picked up much and children tend to want to do this with them as they are like a toy .
We have had a great deal of pleasure from owning Bobby but I admit honestly that I would not have another .

Not ALL KC registered litters come from breeders who have the dogs future life as their first consideration, although I agree that most do and it's a good starting point. If you want a puppy suitable for a family, of any breed, they your breeder needs to have taken into consideration the demands placed on a dog in a family environment, and taken steps to accoustem the pup to these at an early age. Toilet training is helped by the pup having access to two different surfaces (ie a carpeted area and a concrete area), and early socialisation with other dogs, humans and children. Familiarisation with domestic machinery, such as hoovers and washing machines, as well as TV and radio is also important.
Good luck with your hunt :)
