Topic Dog Boards / Health / Lumpy Teats after Season

I`ve not had a bitch before so I hope this is not a silly question !!!!

My bitch has finished her first season 4 weeks ago she is just over 1 year old and a lab. Her vulva is still quite swollen and male dogs are still very interested in her, even to the point of trying to mount her.
Her last 2 teats towards her tummy are quite hard in the area around them and seem quite tender when I gently touch them.
Several people have told me this is `normal` and will gradually go down but I`m quite worried to the point that I`m thinking of taking her to the vets this morning incase she has an infection or hormone inbalance or something.

Is this normal?? or am I right to be worried?

Thanks

It's possible she is brewing a phantom pregnancy. If she were mine I would first take her to the vet to make sure she doesn't have an infection (which can make dogs very interested) and start giving her raspberry leaf tablets, lots of exercise, and cut down her protein slightly.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jeangenie, have made an appointment this morning, she has 2 good walks a day plus she is outside playing and running for most of the day anyway so she is usually kept busy!!!

She has had quite a few episodes of vaginitus which the vet said would clear up with her first season so maybe this could be the problem.

Would I buy the raspberry leaf tablets from the herbalist and what dose would I give her, and for how long?

She is on burns food and treats.

Thanks for replying

I used to get the tablets from the pet shop (Denes make them) - or you may be able to order them on the net - and the dosage is on the bottle. I used to start them at the end of the season and continue for at least 2 months.
