Topic Dog Boards / Health / Hip score
- By nutkin [gb] Date 25.08.04 10:25 UTC
Does anyone know of a site where I could look up to see how the BVA British hip score relates to the Usa or Europe scores. I think for eg, American hip scores are scored......excellent, good, fair. I wondered how this equates to the 53:53...
Does that make sense??

Many thanks

Hope it helps,

That site is incorrect as regards US and UK comparisons.  0 to 6 is excellent (as long as no more than 3 per hip).  6 to 12 is Good (no more than 6 per hip) and so on.  The chart on this site suggests only 0 is an Excellent.

To late to edit folks:

Here is the info
That site is incorrect as regards US and UK comparisons.  The chart on this site suggests only 0 is an Excellent.

OFA                           BVA
Excellent                    0-4 (no>3hip)
Good                         5-10 (no>6/hip)
Fair                           11-18
Borderline                  19-25
Mild Dysplasia            26-35
Moderate                   36-50
Severe                      51-106

The site addy is:
http://www.geocities.com/bluegracepwd/hips.html

This is the same as the BVA's own letter in the canine press a year or so back.

Sorry, have edited the link above, got the wrong one!!

53:53 = total disaster, hips that are totally malformed or non existent and on any system would be the worse possible result and would probably lead to the dogs being PTS before it reached a year.

These are the European/Uk equivalences: (according to Malcolm Willis)
A-Stamp equivalent to 1-10 score under BVA/KC scheme (No sign of HD)
B-Stamp equivalent to 10-20 score under BVA/KC scheme (Transitional)
C-Stamp equivalent to 20-30 score under BVA/KC scheme (Mild HD)
D-Stamp is described as Moderate HD
E-Stamp is described as Severe HD

"A" presumably = 0-10 rather than 1-10. On some certifcates from Europe they give a UK equivalent as well as the letter score. The Maremma I have just brought in from Italy came not only with her score certified on her pedigree but with a document that included an image of her xray, her score in UK terms (0:0) and the scores of relatives who had also been scored (including a half sibling). I was quite impressed with the detail.

Thanks for this I was going to ask this question myself as my new dog has an excellent and I wondered what this meant!

A dog in our breed who was already a US champion had OFA Good, and using the same plates he got a Hip Score of 10 which would tie in well.

Hi Anwen

European or FCI equivalents.  Some of the European countries vary and I would want to know which country a dog had been scored in, and its UK equivalants as close as possible, I feel "HD-B" can be close to 30 in UK terms which in a breed like Dobes is not good when our mean score is 10.  I also wonder is the examination is done in the same way and they look at the same parts of the hip between different countries.

There should have been a question mark after

FCI or European equivalents ?

Hi Kerioak,
I'm sure you're right. My only (limited) experience is with the few dogs in our breed who have been scored in both UK & Scandinavian countries where the results did seem to be the same. Also the UK scores of offspring of Scandinavian imports seem to be what would be expected from their parents' results (if you can follow that!!). I do prefer our scheme, in that using a dog with a core of 13 (Breed average) is very different to using a dog with a score of 20. In Europe, both would be B-stamp.
I do think it's important that people at least understand the basics - as long as they understand that E-stamp does NOT mean Excellent :(  (it happens ........)

Me again. I meant Score of 13, of course in previous post.
For more detailed info on hip scores for different countries, just found this to be very informative.
